WU’s Reed Achieves New Career High 35 Points In Triple-Digit Thriller At Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball closed out a three-game conference road stand with a visit to Greenville University for a mid-week decision. The Gorloks battled the Panthers fiercely but dropped this decision by the final score of 115-119. Webster moves to 10-10 overall and 9–4 in conference play.  

WU's Sebastian Reed recorded new career-highs in points, rebounds, and field goal percentage with 35 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 15-of-17 (88%) from the field for his first career double-double.  

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Greenville exchanged baskets to a tie at 12 apiece that included the first five points by Karl Moore Jr. In addition, Jonah Hibbert knocked down a three-point basket while Jemard Sykes II and Sebastain Reed added back-to-back layups. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 10-2 run that increased the lead to seven at 24-17. In the run, Sykes II contributed consecutive layups when Reed followed up back-to-back lay-ins. WU's Jalen Davis capped off the run with a fast-break layup. 

Shortly later, the Panthers countered with a 7-2 run that cut the lead down to two at 26-24. Midway through the half, Webster and Greenville traded baskets that pushed the score to a 32-30 Gorlok advantage. Less than a minute later, GU's Vincent Rodriguez tied the game at 34 apiece with four straight points. With less than seven minutes to go in the first half, the Panthers generated an 8-0 run that generated a 42-38 deficit. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit to one at 41-42 with a layup by Reed and a free-throw by Davis.

Less than a minute later, Greenville countered with a 9-3 run that included points at the free-throw line by John Renken and Moore Jr. that made the score 44-51. 
With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, the Gorloks and Panthers continued the back-and-forth battle by exchanging baskets as Webster cut the deficit down to three at 53-56. However, Greenville closed out the first half with an 8-0 run that generated the halftime deficit of 53-64. 

Webster opened the second half with a 10-2 run that cut the deficit down to three at 63-66. In the run, Reed and Hibbert added baskets while Moore Jr capped it off with five consecutive points. The Gorloks and Panthers continued back-and-forth play as Reed added six consecutive points that pushed the score to a two-point deficit at 75-77. Less than 30 seconds later, the Panthers answered with a 5-0 run that increased the deficit to seven at 75-82. The game of runs continued as the Gorloks countered with an 8-2 run that started on a pair of three-point baskets by Hibbert. WU's Booker Simmons capped off the run with a layup that cut the deficit down to two at 83-85. 

Midway through the half, Webster answered right back with an 8-1 run that started on a pair of layups by Davis and Moore Jr. Moments later, Simmons tied the game at 88 apiece with a free-throw. WU's Sykes II capped off the run with a layup that gave Webster the 90-89 advantage. Over the next four minutes of play, the Gorloks increased their lead to three at 97-94 with a 7-2 run. In the run, Hibbert drained another three-point basket while Reed and Sykes II added two points apiece. Moments later, the Panthers countered with a 6-2 run that generated a one-point deficit at 99-100. 

Less than two minutes later, Webster took the 107-105 advantage with an 8-5 run on baskets by Diallo, Hibbert, and a conventional three-point play by Reed. With less than three minutes on the clock, Sykes II gave the Gorloks the 113-111 advantage with back-to-back baskets. However, in the final minute and a half, the Panthers closed out the game with an 8-2 run that generated the defeat.  

In addition to Reed's career-high of 35 points, Hibbert tied his career-high of 20 points while shooting a career-best six-of-seven (85.7%) from behind the arc. Those six three-point baskets made by Hibbert was the entire team's total for the game. In addition, Moore Jr achieved a season-high 20 points while securing a team-high 14 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Lastly, Sykes II recorded his 16th double-figure scoring game of the season and seventh straight with 20 points while shooting a season-best nine-of-12 (75%) from the field.  

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, February 8 hosting Eureka College starting at 3:00PM in Grant Gymnasium. This decision will be the annual SLIAC Coaches vs Cancer Game.
