WU's Lancaster Records Career-High 16 Rebounds In Loss To Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with an in-state visit to Westminster College Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks battled the Blue Jays tightly but dropped this conference decision by the final score of 54-49. WU's Bethany Lancaster recorded her fifth double-double of the season that included a team-high of 12 points and a career-high of 16 rebounds.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Westminster exchanged baskets that generated an early 7-3 disadvantage that included points by Emily Wilson and Lancaster. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks answered with a 9-0 run that started on a three-point basket by Claire Williams. On the next Webster possession, Wilson earned a trip at the free-throw line where she gave the Gorloks the lead at 8-7. Sophomore Rylee Denbow capped off the run with three consecutive points that increased the lead to four at 11-7. However, Westminster closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run that tied the game at 13 apiece.  

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run that started on a layups by Kaimyla Nolen and Lancaster. Moments later, Wilson capped off the run with back-to-back baskets for the 21-15 advantage. Immediately following a mid-range jumper by Wilson, the Blue Jays responded with a 7-2 run that cut the lead down to one at 23-22. In the final seconds of the first half, Lancaster split a pair of free-throws that gave the Gorloks the 24-22 advantage into halftime. 

In the opening minute of the second half, the Gorloks increased their lead back to six at 28-22 with back-to-back baskets by Wilson and Nolen. Moments later, the Blue Jays answered with a 6-0 run that tied the game at 28 apiece. Immediately following the WC run, the Gorloks countered with another 6-0 run that started on a layup by Nolen. Less than 40 seconds later, Nysa Gilchrist split a pair of free-throws when Denbow capped it off with a deep three-point basket that increased the lead back to six at 34-28. In the final two minutes of the quarter, Emily Kerce recorded five consecutive points for the Gorloks as she eventually closed out the quarter which gave Webster the 40-32 advantage.   

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with three consecutive points by Lancaster that increased the lead to double-digits at 43-32. Moments later, the Blue Jays answered back with an 11-0 run that tied that game at 43 apiece. Moments later, Lancaster answered back with three straight points that gave Webster the 46-43 lead. However, in the final two minutes, Westminster closed out the game with a 10-2 run that generated the final score. 

For the game, the Gorloks were led by Lancaster as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season that included a team-high of 12 points and a career-high of 16 rebounds. In addition, Wilson recorded her 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season by scoring 10 points. Defensively, Lancaster led the team with four blocks while tying Gilchrist with a team-high four steals. As a team, the Gorloks scored 13 bench points led by Kerce with seven as Denbow contributed the final six. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road visit to Eureka College on Wednesday, January 8 starting at 5:30 PM in Eureka, Illinois.
