Three Gorloks Achieve Double-Figures In Huge Road Victory Over Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a road trip to Eureka College for a mid-week decision Wednesday evening. The Gorloks outscored the Red Devils in the second and third quarters that led to a 70-59 victory. With the victory, Webster improves to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. 

Webster and Eureka opened this conference decision battling back-and-forth as Bethany Lancaster got the Gorloks going offensively with the first three points but trialed 9-3. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to five at 12-7 with back-to-baskets by Meghan Illingworth and Kaimyla NolenWith under two minutes to go in the first, Claire Williams knocked down three consecutive free-throws that cut the deficit to four at 14-10. WU's Rylee Dendow closed out the quarter with back-to-back baskets that kept the deficit at four at 18-14.

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run that took the 19-18 lead. In the run, Lancaster batted through the contact and converted the three-point play by sinking the free-throw. Thirty seconds later, Denbow cashed in on a jumper that gave the Gorloks their first lead of the game. Moments later, Webster responded with a 6-0 run that included four points by Lancaster and a basket by Williams for the 25-21 lead. In the final three minutes in the first half, Nysa Gilchrist scored seven points as Illingworth added a free-throw which eventually generated a halftime lead of 33-26. 

Webster and Eureka opened the second half trading baskets that included three consecutive points by Lancaster and a free-throw by Nolen that made the score 37-30. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks countered with a 7-2 run that increased the lead to double-digits at 44-34. In the run, Lancaster added four more points while Emily Wilson contributed a basket as Gilchrist added a free-throw. Following a basket by EC's Alyssa Abascal, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 9-4 run. In the run, Illingworth added three points while Gilchrist and Emily Kerce contributed a basket apiece. Nolen added the final Gorlok point of the quarter with a free-throw line that made the score 53-40. 

In the opening four possessions of the fourth quarter, Wilson and Lancaster exchanged baskets that led to the highest lead of game of 19 at 61-42. Midway through the quarter, the Red Devils responded with a 10-3 run that cut the lead down to 11 at 66-55. In the final minutes of the game, Wilson drained a pair of free-throws as Lancaster capped off the scoring with a layup that generated the final score.  

For the game, Lancaster led all student-athletes with her third straight double-double that included 25 points and 12 rebounds which is her sixth of the season. In addition, Gilchrist and Wilson achieved double-figures with 10 points each. At the glass, Williams secured seven rebounds and led all student-athletes with four steals.

The Gorloks will start a two-game homestand on Saturday, January 11 hosting the Panthers of Greenville University starting at 1:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
