Five Gorloks Achieve Double-Figures In Road Victory Over Red Devils

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play with a mid-week road trip to Eureka College Wednesday evening. Webster extended their conference win streak to five games with a dominant 68-48 victory over the Red Devils. 

Five Gorloks achieved double-figure led by Gabe Mccrary with a season-high 14 points. With the victory, Webster improves to .500 on the season at 6-6 overall that includes a perfect 5-0 conference record. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage that included baskets by Jemard Sykes II, Karl Moore Jr., and Mccrary. Moments later, the Red Devils countered with a 5-2 run that tied that game at eight apiece. Midway through the half, Webster answered with a 12-4 run that increased the lead to eight at 20-12. In the run, Jonah Hibbert had eight consecutive points that included two three-point baskets as Mccrary and Sebastian Reed added a basket each. 

For the next several minutes of action, Webster and Eureka traded baskets to a ten-point advantage at 26-16. With less than four minutes to go in the first half, the Gorloks constructed a 7-2 run that included another three-point basket by Hibbert and layups by Alpha Diallo and Justin Ugo which generated a halftime lead of 33-20.  

The Gorloks and Red Devils opened the second half exchanging points as Sykes II and Mccrary both drained a pair of free-throws to the 37-24 advantage. Moments later, Webster increased their lead to 17 at 43-28 with a 6-0 run. In the run, Sykes II, Moore Jr., and Mccrary each contributed a basket. 

Immediately following a layup by Mccrary, the Red Devils cut the lead down to 14 at 47-33 with a 7-4 run as that was the closest Eureka would achieve for the remainder of the contest. At the 11:30 mark, Mccrary started a 10-2 run with consecutive baskets in the paint. Sykes II and Diallo capped off the run with back-to-back three-point baskets that generated the lead of 57-35. 

For the next several minutes of play, Webster and Eureka swapped baskets as Reed gave the Gorloks their biggest lead of the game at 26 with a basket in the paint that made the score 66-40. The Red Devils closed out the game with a 8-2 run as Jalen Davis added the final points of the game for the Gorloks with a layup.

For the game, five Gorloks achieved double-figures led by McCrary with a season-high 14 points while Moore Jr contributed 13 points. In addition, Sykes II recorded 12 points while securing a team-high eight rebounds. WU's Hibbert achieved 12 points while Diallo conquered a season-high 10 points. 

Defensively, Moore Jr led all student-athletes with four blocks with Ugo swatted two. As a team, the Gorloks outrebounded the Red Devils 44-30 that included 12 second-chance points. 

The Gorloks will begin a two-game conference homestand this Saturday, January 11 hosting the Panthers of Greenville University at 3:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
