Caquelin’s Career-Best Near Double-Double Falls Short To Aurora In Webster Classic Tip-Off Finale

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out the 2025 Webster Classic Tip-Off with a contest against Aurora University for the championship game. The Gorloks fought hard but dropped this decision by the score of 47-81. First-year Akaela Caquelin recorded a career-best near double-double with nine points and led the team with nine rebounds. With the defeat, Webster moves to 1-1 on the season. 

Webster got off to a slow start as Aurora opened the game with a 12-2 run which included a layup by Meghan Illingworth. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks responded with a 5-0 run with a three-point basket by Caquelin and a layup by Daijah Jones that made the score 7-12. Moments later, Aurora added consecutive baskets that made the score 9-16. However, Webster closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run that cut the deficit to 13-16 on three-point baskets by Emma Smith and Caquelin.
 
Webster and Aurora opened the second quarter trading baskets to the score of 22-24. In that span, Illingworth contributed three points while Havyn Green, Miya Webb, and Emma Smith added two points each. Aurora closed out the final three minute and half minutes of the quarter with a 15-2 run that included a layup by Illingworth that generated the 24-39 halftime deficit.

The Gorloks and Spartans opened the third quarter exchanging baskets to the score of 30-45 that included free-throws made by Illingworth and Webb while Kaimyla Nolen added a jumper. Moments later, Aurora added a 7-0 run that made the score 30-52. With just under three minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks cut the deficit to 18 at 34-52 on a pair of free-throws by Grace Hupp and a jumper by Caquelin. However, the Spartans closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run that made the score 36-58 which included a layup by Williams. 

Aurora opened the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run that pushed the score to 38-70 which included a jumper by Daijah Jones. For the remainder of the game, Green and Smith recorded four points each while Caquelin added a free-throw.

For the game, a trio of Gorloks led with nine points each which included Illingworth, Caquelin, and Smith. In addition, Hayvn Green recorded six points while Webb and Daijah Jones added four points each. Four Gorloks in Emily Kerce, Daijah Jones, Hupp, and Mattie Jones contributed two assists each. At the glass, Caquelin led the team with a career-high nine rebounds as Williams and Daijah Jones secured four. As a team, Webster scored 30 bench points and 22 points in the paint.

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Wednesday, November 19 with a trip to Illinois College for a 6:00pm contest.
