Gorloks Earn 75-58 Victory Over Eagles In Webster Tip-Off Classic Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened their annual Webster Tip-Off Classic Friday evening with a decision against Concordia University (Wis). The Gorloks played in front of their home crowd for the first time this season and earned a 75-58 victory over the Falcons. With the victory, Webster improves to 3-0 overall on the season.  

In the opening minutes of action, Webster got in an early 8-3 deficit that included three points by Ethan Chartrand. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 7-2 run on a three-point basket by Jemard Sykes II and jumpers by Dallas Harding-Fair and Chartrand that tied that game at 10 apiece. 

With the game tied, the Falcons added a 6-3 run for the 13-16 deficit which included a three-point basket by Chartrand. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks countered with a 6-0 run on layups by Sebastian Reed, Colin DeBold, and Painter that took the 19-16 lead.

With the 21-20 lead, Webster added a 12-5 run to the 33-25 lead which included a free throw by Justin Ugo, eight straight points by Charles Nelson, and a three-point basket by Chartrand. Moments later, the Falcons cut the lead to 33-29 with four unanswered points. 

With just over five and a half minutes left in the half, the Gorloks extended their lead to 41-32 with an 8-3 run. Nelson started the run with a dunk as Ugo followed with a pair of free-throws while Painter cashed in on two layups. With two minutes left in the half, DeBold stretched the Gorlok lead to double-digits at 46-36 with a three-point basket. However, the Falcons closed out the half with a 5-2 run that generated the 48-41 Gorlok halftime advantage.

Webster and Concordia (Wis) opened the second half with back-and-forth action that included points in the paint by Nelson and Chartrand. Following a three-point basket by CUW, the Gorloks countered with a 6-0 run to the lead of 60-49 that included four points by Ugo and a jumper by Sykes II. The game continued with teams trading baskets to the score of 66-56 that included four points by Reed and a layup by Sykes II. Following a layup by the Falcons, the Gorloks responded with a 9-0 run that included baskets by Sykes II, Reed, Painter, Nelson, and was capped off with a free-throw by Chartrand. At the 7:54 mark left in regulation, the game was called final due to unsafe court conditions. 

For the game, three Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Nelson with 18 points. Chartrand set a season-high of 14 points while Painter secured his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Painter led the team with six assists while Nelson dished out five. 

At the glass and in addition to Painter, Chartrand secured five rebounds while Ugo collected four. Defensively, Nelson and Harding-Fair earned two steals while Chartrand, Painter, and DeBold recorded one block each. 

As a team, Webster set five new season team-high's which included 19 assists, eight steals, made seven free-throws on a season-high 12 attempts, and three blocks.  In addition, Webster outscored CUW 46-32 with points in the paint and 17-5 in bench points.  

The Gorloks will conclude the Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, November 22 with a rematch decision against the University of the Ozarks at 3:00PM.
