Caquelin’s Career High 23 Points; Webb’s Clutch Free-Throws Power Past Saint Mary’s College 82-71

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out a three-game homestand hosting Saint Mary's College of Indiana Saturday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks earned their second consecutive victory with an 82-71 win over the Belles. WU's Akaela Caquelin recorded a career-high 23 points that included a career-high five three-pointers. With the victory, Webster improves 5-2 overall. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and SMC traded baskets to the score of 7-6 that started on a basket by Emma Smith when Caquelin got her career night started with five quick points. Following the under five minute media timeout, the Gorloks recorded a 13-5 run that generated the 20-11 lead. In the run, Caquelin added five points as Claire Williams and Grace Hupp drained a three-pointer each while Daijah Jones capped off the run with a layup. Webster and SMC closed out the quarter trading basket to the score of 26-17 that included layups by Peyton Dolan, Chassity McCammon, and Caquelin. 

The Belles opened the second quarter with a 9-5 run that cut the lead down to 31-26 which included a three-pointer by Williams and a layup by Havyn Green. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks constructed a 14-4 run that eventually closed out the half. In the run, Hupp knocked down a pair of three-pointers while adding a lay-in while Smith added a basket. The run was capped off with a three-pointer by Webb that generated the 44-32 halftime advantage. 

Webster and SMC opened the third quarter trading three-point baskets which included two by Caquelin to the score of 50-39. With just over four minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks erupted for a 12-0 run to the score of 62-39. In the run, Webb led with four points while McCammon and Dolan added three each as Daijah Jones added a jumper in the paint. The Belles closed out the quarter with a 5-2 run that made the score 64-44. 

Webster opened the fourth quarter with a 10-4 run to the score of 74-48 that included seven points by Green and a three-pointer by Caquelin. Immediately following the Gorlok run, the Belles responded with a 16-1 run that cut the lead to 75-64. In the final minute and half of regulation, the Gorloks went seven-of-eight from the free-throw line that included six made attempts by Webb and one by Kerce that generated the final score.  

In addition to Caquelin, Webb contributed 13 points on 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Hupp secured a season-high 11 points on 3-of-5 from behind the arc while Green contributed a career-high nine points.
 
Williams led the team with five assists while Emily Kerce, Daijah Jones, and Webb dished out three each. At the glass, Webb recorded a team-high five rebounds while Caquelin, Hupp, and Green collected four each.  

As a team, the Gorloks shot a season-best 47.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc.

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Thursday, December 18th competing in the Wittenberg University Tournament with their first foe against Asbury University (Ky.) starting at 12:00PM in Springfield, Ohio.
