Women's Basketball Fall To Asbury In Ohio

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened tournament play at the Wittenberg University Tournament with their first contest against Asbury University Thursday afternoon. The Gorloks showed resilience and steady growth throughout the game but ultimately fell to the Eagles by the score of 63-75. With the defeat, Webster moves to 5-3 overall on the season. 

The Gorloks were tested early as Asbury jumped out to an early 1-15 advantage as Miya Webb opened the scoring for the game with a free-throw. Approximately midway through the quarter, Havyn Green cashed in on a layup that made the score 3-15. Following the basket by Green, the Eagles closed out the quarter with a 12-3 run that made the score 6-27 which included a basket by Akaela Caquelin and free-throw by Emily Kerce.

Caquelin opened the second quarter scoring with a three-pointer that made the score 9-27. Moments later, Emma Smith recorded back-to-back baskets while Webb made a lay-in that made the score 15-33. In the final two minutes of the quarter, the Gorloks constructed a 9-3 run that included a three-pointer by Caquelin and layups by Green and Grace Hupp. The run was capped off with two free-throws by Claire Williams that generated the 24-38 halftime score. 

Webster and Asbury opened the third quarter trading baskets to the score of 28-43 which included layups by Caquelin and Kerce. Moments later, the Eagles added an 8-2 run that pushed the score to 30-51. Shortly later, the Gorloks closed the quarter with a 10-2 run which included five points by Webb, a three-pointer by Peyton Dolan, and a layup by Kerce to the score of 40-53. 

The Gorloks and Eagles opened the fourth trading baskets to the score of 45-59 that included a layup by Kerce and three-pointer by Williams. Shortly later, Caquelin responded with eight straight points for Webster that included two three-pointers and a jumper that made the score 53-63. Less than 30 seconds later, Dolan sank another three-pointer that pushed the score to 56-66. With three minutes to go, the Eagles added a 7-2 run that made the score 58-73. WU's Daijah Jones and Hupp closed out the scoring for Webster with a three-pointer and a jumper respectively.  

For the game, Caquelin led the team with 18 points that included a team-high four three-pointers. In addition, Webb contributed eight points as Williams and Kerce added seven points each. Caquelin and Webb tied for a team-high three assists each as Williams and Daijah Jones had two apiece. At the glass, Webb led with six while Caquelin secured five as Kerce grabbed four. Defensively, Cauquelin led with three steals as Webb and Mattie Jones had two each. Webb recorded the lone block of the game for Webster. 

The Gorloks will close out tournament play tomorrow December 19 with a decision against the host Wittenberg University at 2:00PM eastern time.
