Gorloks Late Rally Falls Short To Centre 64-66

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened a two-game homestand with a non-conference decision against Centre College Monday afternoon in Grant Gym. The Gorloks second-half comeback falls short by the score of 64-66. WU's Grace Hupp recorded a career-high 15 points that included a career-high six free-throws. With the defeat, Webster moves to 5-5 overall on the season.

Webster and Centre opened this decision trading points to a tie at seven apiece that included baskets from Miya Webb, Akaela Caquelin, Claire Williams, and a free-throw by Emma Smith. Shortly later, Hupp and Havyn Green gave the Gorloks the 11-9 advantage with a basket in the paint each. The Colonels closed out the quarter with two layups while WU's Green sank a free-throw that generated the 12-13 deficit. 

The Gorloks and Colonels started the second quarter with back-and-forth action to the score of 18-20 that included baskets from Green, Webb, and Smith. Just before the midway mark in the quarter, Centre added a 6-0 run that pushed the score to 18-26. Immediately following that run, Webster responded with a 7-2 run started on a three-pointer by Williams. Moments later, Hupp and Green cut the deficit to 25-28 with a pair of free-throws each. Centre closed out the quarter with a 6-3 run which included free-throws by Webb and Hupp that generated the 28-34 halftime deficit.   

Webster and Centre opened the third quarter exchanging points to the score of 33-40 that included three free-throws by Webb and a layup by Caquelin. Following a basket by the Colonels, the Gorloks responded with a 7-0 run that included five points by Emily Kerce and a basket by Smith which tied the game at 40 apiece. With the game tied, the Colonels closed out the quarter with a 12-6 run to the score of 46-52 that included three points by Meghan Illingworth and three points by Caquelin.  

The Gorloks opened the fourth quarter with a 5-2 run that cut the deficit to 51-54 which included a pair of free-throws by Caquelin and a three-pointer by Hupp. Following a basket by the Colonels, Webster responded with a 6-2 run which cut the deficit to one at 57-58 on baskets from Caquelin, Hupp, and Webb. 

With just over three minutes left on the clock, Centre stretched their lead to five at 57-62 with a 4-0 run. Between the minute markers of 2:40 and 59 seconds, both teams added three points each that pushed the score to 60-65. 

With 49 seconds remaining on the clock, Caquelin made a layup as Hupp followed up with a pair of free-throws that cut the deficit to one at 64-65. With 11 seconds to go, Centre made a free-throw that made the score 64-66. With seven seconds remaining on the clock, Webster's game-tying shot fell just short which generated the final score.  


For the game and in addition to Hupp, Caquelin contributed 13 points while Webb added 10 points. Caquelin dished out a team-high four assists as Webb added three assists. At the glass, Illingworth led with a season-high eight boards while Hupp collected a season-high six rebounds. 

The Gorloks will close out this homestand on Saturday, January 3rd hosting Westminster College for a conference decision at 1:00PM in Grant Gym.
