ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball closed out a two-game homestand by hosting Westminster College for the conference decision Saturday afternoon in Grant Gym. The Gorloks battled the Blue Jays but fell by the score of 45-67. Webster moves to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
In the opening five minutes of play, Westminster jumped out to a 16-4 advantage which included layups by
Chassity McCammon and
Miya Webb. Shortly later,
Meghan Illingworth pushed the score to 8-18 with back-to-back baskets. In the final minute of the quarter,
Emily Kerce drained a three-pointer and Webb made a jumper that made the score 13-24.
The Gorloks opened the second quarter scoring with three free-throws that pushed the score of 16-24; two free-throws by
Akaela Caquelin and one by Illingworth. However, Westminster closed out the quarter with an 8-2 run that made the score 32-18 which included a layup by Illingworth.
Webster and Westminster opened the third quarter trading baskets to the score of 25-41 which included five consecutive points by
Emma Smith and jumper in the paint by Illingworth. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run to the score of 33-41 which included four points by
Daijah Jones and two points each from
Grace Hupp and Webb. However, the Blue Jays closed out the quarter with a 12-4 run to the score of 37-53 as
Peyton Dolan sank a three-pointer and Caquelin added a free-throw.
Webster and Westminster opened the final quarter trading baskets to the score of 43-59 which included a basket each from Illingworth, Smith, and Caquelin. However, the Blue Jays closed out the game with an 8-2 run as Caquelin added a layup.
For the game, Illingworth led the team with a season-high 11 points while Caquelin and Smith contributed seven apiece. At the glass, McCammon and Illingworth led the team with seven boards each. As a team, Webster outscored Westminster 20-10 on points off turnovers and 18-11 in bench points.
The Gorloks will continue conference play on Wednesday, January 7th with a visit to Spalding University starting at 5:30PM eastern time in Louisville, Kentucky.
