Webster Rolls Past Spalding Behind Illingworth’s Season-High 14 Points and Career-High Five Blocks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened a two-game conference roadstand with a visit to Spalding University Wednesday evening. The Gorloks dominated the paint and earned a convincing 54-38 victory over the Golden Eagles. WU's Meghan Illingworth led the team with a season-high 14 points, seven rebounds, and recorded a career-high five blocks. With the victory, Webster improves to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. 

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster and Spalding got off to slow offensive starts but the Golden Eagles struck first on the scoreboard with a close-range basket. Following that basket, the Gorloks responded with a 15-3 run that eventually ended the quarter and started on a free-throw by Kaimyla Nolen. In addition, Illingworth recorded four points while Nolen, Miya Webb, Claire Williams, Daijah Jones, and Emily Kerce added a basket each. The Gorloks took the 15-5 advantage after the first quarter.

Spalding opened the second quarter with a basket but Webster responded with an 8-0 run for the 23-7 advantage on a three-pointer by Peyton Dolan and Akaela Caquelin while Webb added a lay-in Following a three-pointer by Spalding, Illingworth closed out the quarter scoring for Webster with six consecutive points that generated the 29-16 halftime lead. 

Spalding opened the third quarter scoring with a jumper but Webster countered with a 12-0 run that stretched the lead to 41-18. In the run, Caquelin sank a pair of three-pointers while Webb added a basket. Webster sank four free-throws in the run as two came from Illingworth as Emma Smith and Hupp added one each. Spalding closed out the quarter with a three-pointer that made the score 41-21.

The Golden Eagles opened the final quarter with a 10-5 run to the score of 46-31 which included a layup by Webb and a three-pointer by Hupp. Midway through the quarter, Webster added a 8-2 run on two points each from Illingworth, Webb, Williams, and Caquelin that pushed the score to 54-33. Spalding closed out the scoring for the game with the final five points that generated the final score. 

For the game and in addition to Illingworth, Caquelin contributed 11 points as Webb recorded 10 points. Williams led the team with a season-high five assists while Nolen dished out three.

As a team, Webster outscored Spalding 26-8 with points in the paint, 20-4 in bench points, and scored 30 points off turnovers. In addition, Webster recorded a season-high six blocks. In addition, Webster recorded their best defensive game of the season by holding Spalding to just 21.1 percent from the field.

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Saturday, January 10 with a visit to Principia College starting at 1:00PM in Elsah, Illinois.
