Webster Holds Off Principia Late for 55-50 Road SLIAC Victory

ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Principia College on Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks generated a double-digit halftime lead and held off a strong fourth comeback from Principia for the 55-50 victory. With the victory, Webster improves to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. 
 
Webster started the game with a slow offensive start as Principia jumped out to the 7-2 advantage which included a layup by Meghan Illingworth. Shortly later, the Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run for the 10-7 advantage on baskets from Kaimyla Nolen, Grace Hupp, and Emma Smith while Daijah Jones sank a pair of free-throws. Following a basket by the Panthers, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 7-3 run to the 17-12 advantage on a three-pointer by Hupp and layup by Smith and Akaela Caquelin.

Webster and Principia opened the second quarter trading baskets to the score of 23-18 that included six consecutive points by Illingworth. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks recorded a 7-1 run to the 30-19 lead which included a layup by Peyton Dolan, a three-pointer by Miya Webb, and a jumper by Emily Kerce. Following a basket by the Panthers, Webster closed out the quarter with a 5-2 run on three free-throws from Hupp and a jumper by Smith that generated the 35-23 halftime lead. 

The Gorloks opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run for the 44-25 lead that started on a free-throw by Illingworth. Moments later, Dolan sank back-to-back three-pointers when Illingworth followed up with a layup. Shortly later, Caquelin made a layup when Claire Williams set the 48-30 advantage with a pair of free-throws. For the final four minutes of the quarter, the Panthers added a 6-0 run that pushed the score to 48-36. 

Williams opened the fourth quarter scoring as she cashed in on a jumper in the paint. Moments later, the Panthers countered with a 10-0 run that made the score 50-46. Shortly later, Jones stretched the Gorlok lead to 52-46 lead with a layup. With under two minutes to go, Principia added consecutive baskets that made the score 52-50. In the final 10 seconds of regulation, the Gorloks iced the game at the free-throw line that included one from Nolen and two from Webb.  

For the game, Illingworth led the team with 11 points while Dolan and Hupp recorded eight points each. Smith contributed six points as Webb recorded five points. At the glass, Illingworth and Caquelin recorded team-high seven rebounds each while Nolen collected four. WU's Williams tied her career-high with seven assists as Caquelin and Jones dished out two each. As a team, Webster outscored Principia 24-3 and 24-16 on points off turnovers. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Wednesday, January 14th hosting Eureka College at 5:30PM in Grant Gym.
