Gorloks Extend SLIAC Win Streak To Three Games With 93-46 Victory Over Eureka

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play by hosting Eureka College for a mid-week decision Wednesday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks dominated the paint with 60 points which led to a 93-46 victory over the Red Devils. With the victory, Webster improves to 8-6 overall, 5-1 in conference play, and extends SLIAC win streak to three games. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster jumped out to the early 9-2 lead on a perfect four-of-four from the field. In that stretch, Kaimyla Nolen made two baskets, Peyton Dolan sank  a three-pointer and Miya Webb cashed a layup. Moments later, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 14-2 on a layup by Meghan Illingworth and three-pointer by Webb.

Following a basket by Eureka, the Gorloks responded with a 10-4 run that started on back-to-back three-pointers by Emma Smith and Webb. Moments later, Nolen made a layup and Illingworth closed out the opening quarter scoring for Webster with a pair of free-throws for the 24-8 lead. 

The Gorloks and Red Devils opened the second quarter trading points in the paint to the score of 28-12 which included baskets by Akaela Caquelin and Addison Price. Moments later, Webster constructed an 8-0 run to the 36-12 advantage on layups from Emily Kerce, Illingworth, and Webb.

With under four minutes to go in the quarter, the Gorloks added a 9-2 run that included two layups each from Webb and Illingworth as Price added a free-throw. Price closed out the scoring for quarter for Webster with consecutive layups that generated the 49-20 halftime lead.  24 of the 25 points scored in the second quarter were all on layups.  

The Red Devils opened the third quarter with a basket but the Gorloks countered with an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 57-22. In the run, Illingworth contributed four points while Claire Williams and Webb made a basket each.

Shortly later, Webster constructed a 14-3 run that stretched the lead to 72-29 that started on back-to-back three-pointers by Dolan and Kerce. Moments later, Smith and Daijah Jones added a basket each when Kerce followed up with consecutive layups. Jones and Kerce closed out the quarter scoring with a layup each that pushed the score to 76-33. 

Eureka opened the final quarter with five quick points but Dolan and D.Jones followed up with baskets that pushed the score to 80-32. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 9-3 run that pushed the score to 89-43 that included three free-throws by Terryn Ford and a basket each from Chassity McCammon, Mattie Jones, and Annie Sale. In the final minute of play, Ford and Kaelyn Stager added a basket each that generated the final score. 

For the game, Webb led the team with 17 points which included a pair from behind the arc. Illingworth recorded a season-high 16 points while Kerce contributed 11 points. WU's Dolan added eight points as Price recorded a career-high of seven points.  In addition, Ford recorded a career-high five points as Stager recorded her first basket of the season. At the glass, Kerce recorded a team-high and season-high five rebounds while Illingworth, Webb, and Caquelin collected four each. 

Webb and Emma Smith tied with a team-high four assists as those four assists marked a career-high for Smith. In addition, Illingworth recorded a season-high three assists as Nolen dished out three. Defensively, Nolen recorded a season-high four steals while Price and Dolan recorded career-highs of three steals each.

As a team, Webster shot a season-best 48.8 percent from the field, made a season-high 39 field goals made, and dished out a season-high of 24 assists. In addition, the Gorloks outscored the Red Devils 60-28 with points in the paint, 44-8 in bench points, 35-7 on points off turnovers. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Saturday, January 17th with a visit to Greenville University starting at 1:00PM in Greenville, Illinois.
