Gorloks Push No. 4 WashU to the Limit But Fall 84-79 In Road Thriller

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued their non-conference schedule with a cross town visit to the fourth-ranked Bears of Washington University on Saturday. The Gorloks shot 61.2 percent from the field in the first half that generated the 49-34 halftime lead but a 20-0 second half run by the Bears generated the 84-79 defeat. With the loss, Webster moves to 6-2 overall this season.  

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster and WashU exchanged baskets to a tie at nine apiece that included two three-pointers by Jemard Sykes II and one by Ethan Chartrand. With the game tied, the Gorloks recorded a 10-4 run that started on an add-one play by Sebastian Reed. Moments later, Dallas Harding-Fair and Justin Ugo added a basket when William Burroughs V sank a three-point basket that stretched the lead to 19-13. 

Just before the middle of the half, WashU chipped back with a 7-3 run that made the score 22-20 that included a three-point basket by Charles Nelson. Immediately following the WashU run, the Gorloks countered with a 11-3 run to the lead of 33-23 that included five points by Chartrand, a four-point play by Sykes II, and a tip-in by Nelson.

With just over seven and half minutes left in the first half, the Bears added a 7-4 run as baskets by Sykes II and Reed pushed the score to 37-28. The Gorloks closed out the final three minutes of the first half with a 12-4 run that included five points by Sykes II, three by Adam Painter, and two points each from Ugo and Reed for the 49-34 halftime lead. 

The Bears opened the second half with a 12-6 run to the score of 55-46 that included baskets by Sykes II, Chartrand, and Nelson. Moments later, the Gorloks responded with a 10-5 run to the score of 65-51 that included seven points by Chartrand and a three-pointer by Nelson. Shortly later, Chartrand and Reed added a basket each that made the score 69-56. 

Midway through the second half, the Bears constructed a 20-0 run that generated the 69-76 deficit. Moments later, Reed added four consecutive points that cut the deficit to 73-76. Following those points by Reed, WashU added five quick points that made the score 73-81. With over two minutes left on the clock, the Gorloks recorded a 6-0 run on four points by Nelson and two by Chartrand that cut the deficit to 79-81. In the final minute of regulation, the Bears added three points that generated the loss. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figure scoring marks led by Chartrand with a season-high 21 points that included shooting nine-of-13 from the field. In addition, Sykes II recorded a season-high of 19 points that included a season-high four three-pointers. WU's Nelson contributed 14 points while Reed recorded a season-high 13 points. 

Painter led the team with five assists while Nelson and Ugo dished out three apiece. At the glass, Painter recorded a team-high six rebounds as Nelson collected five. On the defensive end, Nelson led with three steals while Chartrand and Painter recorded one block each. As a team, Webster outscored WashU 18-8 in bench points and 11-2 on points off turnovers. 

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Friday, December 12 hosting Wright State Lake University at 8:00PM for their first game of the Webster Classic in Grant Gym.
