Women’s Basketball Cruise Past Owls For Eleventh Conference Victory Of The Season

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Mississippi University for Women Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks earned a dominant road victory over the Owls by the final score of 99-46. With the victory, Webster improves to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage that started on a layup by Claire Williams when Bethany Lancaster answered with nine straight points. The Gorloks and Owls continued this contest exchanging baskets as a jumper by Rylee Denbow pushed the score to 17-10. Webster closed out the first quarter with a 7-2 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Denbow. Moments later, Williams knocked down a three-point basket when Nysa Gilchrist increased the lead to double-digits at 26-15 with a layup.

The Owls opened the second quarter with a 7-3 run that cut the lead down to seven at 29-22 that included a three-point play by Emily Wilson. Moments later, the Gorloks erupted for a 22-0 run that increased the lead to 51-22. In the run, Lancaster recorded eight points while Williams and Kaimyla Nolen added three points each. In addition, four Gorloks in Denbow, Gilchrist, Aleyna Sherman, and Wilson contributed a basket each. The Owls closed out the first half scoring on a pair of free-throws by Takiela Jones that generated the 51-24 halftime advantage. 
 
The Gorloks opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run that started on back-to-back layups by Gilchrist and Williams. Wilson capped off the run with consecutive baskets in the paint that increased the lead to 59-26. Midway through the quarter, Webster and MUW traded baskets that pushed the score to 66-34. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 12-0 run that included five points from both Lancaster and Grace Hupp as Jena Stannard added a layup that made the score 78-34. 

Webster opened the final quarter with a 9-0 run that included layups by Lancaster, Gilchrist, and Meghan Illingworth. WU's Julie Diveney capped off the run with a three-point basket that increased the lead to 87-34. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks answered with an 8-2 run that included four points by Hupp while Sherman and Avery Forrester added a basket each that pushed the score to 96-41. WU's Amaya Johnson added a fastbreak layup when Khamyri Jordan contributed a free-throw that closed out the scoring for the Gorloks. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Lancaster with a game-high 26 points while securing a team-high eight rebounds. In addition, Williams contributed 13 points that included 3-of-5 from behind the arc. WU's Wilson and Denbow rounded out the double-figure scores with 11 points and 10 points respectively. 

As a team, Webster outscored MUW 68-16 with points in the paint and scored 40 points off Owls turnovers.

The Gorloks will close out this three-game conference roadstand with a trip to Greenville University on Wednesday, February 5 starting at 5:30PM in Greenville, Illinois.
