WU’s Lancaster and Diveney Combined For 50 Points In Road Victory At Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball closed out a three-game conference roadstand with a visit to Greenville University for a mid-week decision. The Gorloks extended their conference win streak to nine games with a huge road win over the Panthers by the final score of 86-62. With the victory, Webster improves to 18-2 overall and 12-1 in conference play

WU's Bethany Lancaster led all scorers with 32 points while shooting 12-of-13 from the free-throw line for her third 30-point performance of the season and second in the past three games. In addition, senior Julie Diveney recorded a new career-high of 18 points while shooting six-of-eight from behind the arc. With those six made three-point baskets, Diveney moves into a tie for third all-time in program history for the most made three-point baskets in a single-game. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Greenville exchanged baskets to a tie at seven apiece that included a three-point basket by Emily Kerce and back-to-back layups by Lancaster and Emily WilsonMoments later, the Gorloks responded with a 10-3 run that started on consecutive layups by Wilson and Claire Williams. WU's Diveney capped off the run with back-to-back three-point baskets that increased the lead to double-digits at 17-7. Webster and Greenville closed out the quarter trading baskets as Williams and Rylee Denbow added a basket each that made the score 21-13.  

The Gorloks and Panthers started the second quarter with back-and-forth play that pushed the score to 24-17. Less than a minute later, Lancaster responded with 11 consecutive points for the Gorloks that increased the lead back to double-digits at 35-21. Midway through the quarter, the Panthers answered with a 7-2 run that cut the lead down to nine at 37-28. WU's Diveney closed out the first half scoring for the Gorloks with another three-point basket that generated the 40-29 halftime lead.

Webster and Greenville opened the third quarter with back-and-forth action that included four straight free-throws by Lancaster to the score of 44-34. Moments later, the Gorloks countered with a 9-0 run that started on a layup by Nysa Gilchrist. In addition to Glichrist, Lancaster added four points while Kaimyla Nolen capped off the run with a three-point basket that took the 53-34 lead. With less than four minutes remaining in the quarter, the Panthers answered with a 6-0 run that cut the lead down to 57-44. Webster and Greenville closed out the quarter trading baskets that included four points by Lancaster, another three-point by Diveney, and a layup by Williams that made the score 66-51. 

The Gorloks and Panthers opened the final quarter exchanging baskets that pushed the score to 74-58 as Lancaster and Williams added four points each. At the 6:12 mark, WU's Meghan Illingworth started a 7-0 run with a free-throw as Denbow followed up with a jumper. Nolen and Gilchrist capped off the run with back-to-back layups that increased the lead to 81-58. WU's Illingworth and Grace Hupp closed out the Gorloks scoring for the game with a layup and a three-point basket respectively. 

In addition to the 50 combined points by Lancaster and Diveney, Williams rounded out double-figure scorers with 10 points while leading the team with four assists.  As a team, Webster generated 38 points off Greenville turnover while outsourcing the Panthers 33-16 in bench points. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, February 8 hosting the Red Devils of Eureka College starting at 1:00PM. This decision will be the annual SLIAC Coaches vs Cancer / Black History Month Game in Grant Gymnasium.
