Four Gorloks Achieved Double-Figures In Home Victory Over Eureka

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team hosted Eureka College for the annual SLIAC Coaches vs Cancer game Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. Four Gorloks achieved double-figures that led to a 80-66 victory over the Red Devils. With the victory, Webster improves to 19-2 overall and 13-1 in conference play.

Webster and Eureka opened this decision with consecutive points by Emily Kerce and Elena Redgate that knotted the score at four apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with an 8-2 run that started on a layup by Meghan Illingworth. In addition, Nysa Gilchrist drained a pair of free-throws when Emily Wilson capped off the run with four points that increased the lead to 12-6. Following a basket by Eureka, Webster countered with an 8-4 run that started on a jumper by Julie Diveney. On the next Gorlok possession, Jena Stannard knocked down a three-point basket. Shortly later, WU's Gilchrist and Aleyna Sherman closed out the quarter scoring at the line that took the 20-12 advantage.    

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 12 at 26-14 with baskets from Kerce, Williams, and Wilson. Less than a minute later, Eureka countered with a 7-0 run that cut the lead down to five at 26-21. Midway through the quarter, Webster answered right back with a 7-0 run of their own that started on back-to-back layups by Illingworth and Kaimyla Nolen. WU's Rylee Denbow capped off the run with a three-point basket that took the 33-21 advantage. The Gorloks and Red Devils continued this decision trading baskets that pushed the score to 39-26. Eureka closed out the first half with a 9-0 run that generated the 39-35 halftime advantage.  

The Gorloks opened the second half with five straight points by Kerce and a conventional three-point play by Illingworth that stretched the lead to 47-38. Midway through the half, Webster constructed a 10- 0 run that increased the advantage to 59-42. In the run, Wilson added six points while Illingworth and Nolen contributed layups. The Gorloks closed out the quarter scoring at the free-throw line as Wilson netted three while Nolen sank a pair that pushed the lead to 64-50.

Webster and Eureka opened the final quarter exchanging baskets that made the score 70-56. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks put the game out of reach with an 8-3 run. In the run, Diveney knocked down four free-throws while Gilchrist sank a pair. WU's Denbow capped off the run with a jumper that made the score 78-59. Wilson added the final points of the game for Webster with a layup that led to their 10th straight conference victory. 

For the game, the Gorloks were led offensively by Wilson with 22 points that included shooting 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. In addition, Kerce contributed 13 points while leading the team with a career-high six steals. WU's Illingworth recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gilchrist rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points that included a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a visit to Spalding University on Wednesday, February 12 starting at 5:30 PM (ET) in Louisville, Kentucky.
