Gorloks Fast Start Fuels 75-58 Road Win Over Spalding

LOUISVILLE, KY. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Spalding University Wednesday evening in Columbia Gym . The Gorloks extended their conference win streak to 11 games with a 75-58 road victory over the Golden Eagles.

With the victory, it marks the fourth consecutive season of 20-wins under Head Coach Jordan Olufson as the Gorloks improve to 20-2 overall and 14-1 in conference play. WU's Nysa Gilchrist recorded a new career-high of seven assists in this contest. 

The Gorloks opened this game very active on both ends of the court with that propelled an 8-0 advantage that started on a three-point basket by Claire Williams. Moments later, Bethany Lancaster collected a steal that led to a pair of free-throws by Emily Kerce. Following a block by Emily Wilson, WU's Lancaster capped off the run with a layup. Just before the mid way portion in the quarter, Kerce extended the Webster lead to double-digits at 14-4 with back-to-back three-point baskets. 

With four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Gorloks erupted for a 13-2 run that eventually ended the quarter. The run was started on baskets in the paint by Kaimyla Nolen and Williams when Meghan Illingworth followed up with four quick points. WU's Nolen and Rylee Denbow closed out the quarter scoring with fast break baskets that took the 27-8 advantage.  

In the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Golden Eagles cut the lead down to 27-15 with a 7-0 run. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks responded with a 6-0 run that started on a conventional add-one three-point play by Lancaster. Shortly later, WU's Julie Diveney knocked down a three-point basket that extended the lead to 37-19. However, Spalding closed out the first half with a 11-2 run that generated a Gorlok halftime advantage of 39-30.  

The Gorloks opened the second half with an 8-3 run that started on a free-throw by Gilchrist. In addition, Wilson added back-to-back baskets when Kerce capped off the run with another three-point basket that increased the lead to 47-33. Midway through the quarter, Spalding responded with a 8-1 run that cut the lead down to 48-41. However, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run that started on a layup by Illingworth. WU's Gilchrist followed up with back-to-back baskets that generated the 54-41 lead. 

Webster and Spalding opened the final quarter exchanging baskets that started on another three-point basket by Williams. Moments later, Lancaster followed up with four quick points when Wilson sank a pair of free-throws that generated the 63-49 lead. Midway through the quarter, the Golden Eagles answered with a 6-2 run that cut the Gorlok lead down to 10 at 63-53. With less than three minutes to go, WU's Lancaster converted another and-one three-point play. Moments later, Gilchrist followed up with a free-throw that increased the lead to 69-55. WU's Aleyna Sherman and Williams capped off the scoring for the game with back-to-back three-point baskets. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Lancaster with 15 points while Kerce contributed 13 points that included three 3-pointers. In addition, Williams recorded 12 points on three-of-four from behind the arc as Wilson scored 10 points. Defensively, the Gorloks generated 18 steals led by Lancaster with five while Gilchrist swiped four. 

The Gorloks will return back to Grant Gymnasium this Saturday, February 15 hosting the Panthers of Principia College starting at 1:00PM for Senior Day.
