WU’s Wilson Records Fourth Double-Double Of Season In Victory Over Principia On Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team hosted Principia College Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium for Senior Day. The Gorloks outdueled the Panthers by the final score of 73-62 for their 12th conference victory in a row. With the victory, Webster improves to 21-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play. 

Prior to the game, Head Coach Jordan Olufson and his coaching staff honored five graduating seniors; Amaya Johnson, Julie Diveney, Jena Stannard, Nysa Gilchrist, and Emily Wilson. While at Webster, this senior class were members of two undefeated regular seasons; 25-0 in 2021-22 and 27-0 in 2023-24. In addition, all five seniors are 3x SLIAC Champions and 3x NCAA appearance participants and hold an overall record of 77-6 and 49-3 in SLIAC play.  

Webster and Principia opened this decision exchanging 6-0 runs that included four points by Wilson and a pair of free-throws by Meghan Illingworth. Moments later, Principia's Carolina Rojas netted a three-point basket but Wilson answered right back with a basket that made the score 9-8. The Panthers closed out the opening quarter with a 6-3 run that generated the 15-11 deficit.  

The Gorloks opened the second with a monstrous 15-0 run that started on consecutive baskets in the paint by Wilson. Less than a minute later, Gilchrist knocked down a pair of free-throws for the 17-15 lead. Shortly later, Emily Kerce drained a three-point basket when Bethany Lancaster capped off the run with back-to-back baskets that generated the 26-15 advantage. 

Midway through the quarter, the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run that cut the lead down to five at 26-21. Immediately following that run, the Gorloks answered right back with a 5-0 run that started on a and-one play by Lancaster. Two minutes later, Illingworth capped off the run with a layup that increased the lead back to double-digits at 31-21. Webster closed out the first half with a 6-3 run on four points by Grace Hupp and a pair of free-throws by Rylee Denbow for the 37-24 halftime lead. 

The Gorloks and Panthers opened the third quarter on three-point baskets by Hannah Myers and Kerce. A minute later, Wilson cashed a pair of free-throws that increased the lead to 42-27. Following a pair of baskets by Principia, WU's Wilson and Diveney increased the lead to 47-31 with a 5-0 run that included a three-point basket by Diveney. 

Midway through the quarter, the Panthers countered with a 10-0 run that cut the lead down to six at 47-41. With just over two minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks answered back with a 6-0 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Aleyna Sherman. WU's Claire Williams and Gilchrist capped off the run with back-to-back fastbreak layups that increased the lead back to double-digits at 53-41. WU's Sherman closed out the quarter with three consecutive points to the lead of 56-45. 

The Gorloks and Panthers opened the final quarter trading baskets as a layup by Gilchrist kept the same margin of 11 at 60-49. Moments later, the Panthers answered with a 6-2 run that pushed the score to 65-55. In the final minutes of regulation, Webster and Principia exchanged baskets that included four points by Sherman and two points by Illingworth and Diveney that generated the final score.  

For the game, Wilson led the Gorloks on both sides of the court with her fourth double-double of the season that included 14 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Sherman recorded a new-career high of 11 points that included five-of-five from the free-throw line. WU's Illingworth recorded 10 points while shooting four-of-four from the line and added three blocks. 

As a team, Webster shot a season-best 88 percent (22-of-25) from the free-throw line that included three straight quarters of perfection. In addition, the Gorloks outrebounded the Panthers 47-35 that led to 14 fastbreak points. 

The Gorloks will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday, February 19 hosting Blackburn College at 5:30PM for their annual Pink Game in Grant Gymnasium.
