WU's Moore Jr’s Records New Career High 23 Points In Victory Over Principia

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened a two-game homestand hosting Principia College Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. Three Gorloks earned double-figures led by Karl Moore Jr. with 23 points that included a perfect three-of-three from the free-throw line that led to a 76-64 victory over the Panthers. With the victory, Webster improves to 12-11 overall and 11-5 in conference play.  

In the opening minutes, Webster and Principia exchanged baskets to a 6-5 Gorlok lead that included three consecutive layups; two by Moore Jr and one by Jemard Sykes II. Moments later, the Panthers answered with a 10-4 run that generated a five point deficit at 15-10. Less than a minute later, Principia countered with an 8-0 run that was eventually snapped by a layup by Justin Ugo that made the score 26-16. In the final five minutes of the first half, the Gorloks constructed an 11-4 run that started on seven consecutive points by Sykes II. WU's Alpha Diallo closed out the first half with four free-throws that cut the halftime deficit down to eight at 37-29.

The Panthers opened the second half with a jumper by Charley Hoffman when Sebastain followed up with eight straight points for the Gorloks that cut the deficit down to two at 39-37. Moments later, Principia countered with a 6-2 run that pushed the score to 45-39. 

In the next five minutes of play, Webster erupted for a 20-3 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Justin Ugo. After a steal by Booker Simmons, Reed cashed in a layup when Ugo followed up with another pair of free-throws. On the next two Gorlok possessions, Josh Luster recorded five points that included a three-point basket. WU's Moore Jr capped off the run with nine unanswered points that increased the lead to 59-48. 

Following a basket by Principia, Moore Jr and Reed added back-to-back layups that increased the lead to 13 at 63-50. With under eight minutes to go, the Panthers constructed a 9-0 run that cut the lead down to six at 66-60. With less than four minutes in regulation, the Gorloks closed out the game with a 10-4 run that included five layups; two by Luster, two by Moore Jr, and one by Sykes II that secured the victory.   

In addition to Moore Jr, Reed recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sykes II contributed 16 points that included a pair of three-point baskets. WU's Diallo matched his season-high of 10 rebounds. 

As a team, Webster outscored Principia 56-32 in points in the paint and shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.

The Gorloks will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday, February 19 hosting Blackburn College at 7:30PM for Senior night.
