Gorloks Capture Season Sweep Over IC With 5-2 Victory On Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's tennis team continued non-conference play with a road match at Illinois College on Sunday. The Gorloks defeated the Blueboys by the final score of 5-2 which earned the season sweep. With the victory, Webster secured their seventh victory of the season.  

Webster and IC opened the match with doubles competitions as the Gorloks won all three matches. In the number one doubles match, the team of Ethan Foucheaux and Matthew Birchmeier shutout their opponents 6-0 for the victory. 

In the second doubles match, the duo of Carson Fisher and Jack Forlenza battled their opponents to a 6-4 victory. 

In the third doubles match, the team of Nicholas Granada and Shawn Smith grinded out a 6-4 victory that took the 3-0 match lead.  

In singles play, the Gorloks won four matches that led to the victory. In the number one singles match, Foucheaux lined out against Tejas Zala and dominated Zala in straight sets by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1. 

In the second singles match, Fisher faced off against Jeff Wernsing as both student-athletes opened the match with back-and-forth action. With the opening set tied at six apiece, Fisher secured the 7-6 opening set victory. In the second set, Wernsing responded with a 7-5 victory that forced a third set. In the third set, both student-athletes battled point-for-point but Fisher fell late for the defeat. 

In the fourth single match, Granada lined up against Andrus Dupre as both student-athletes battled back-and-forth in the opening set. Late in the opening set, Granada outdueled Dupre for the 7-6 opening set victory. In the second set, Granada got down early and unfortunately dropped the set 2-6 that forced a third set. In the third set, both student-athletes went point-for-point to a tie at 12 apiece. Granada closed out the final two points of the match that won the match 14-12. 

In the fifth singles match, Forlenza was tasked against Grayson Dupre and dropped the opening set to Dupre 4-6. In the second set, Forlenza responded with a dominant 6-1 set victory that tied the match at one apiece. In the third set, Forlenza got up early and paced to a 10-5 victory that sealed the match. 

In the sixth singles match, Smith faced off against Titus Ashford and secured six set victories but dropped the match in straight sets by the scores of 2-6 and 4-6. 

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play on Friday, April 11 hosting Hendrix College starting at 11:00AM in Webster Groves, Missouri.
