Five Gorloks Achieve Double-Figures In 96-72 Triumph Over Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team traveled to Principia College for a conference decision on Saturday in Hay Field House. Five Gorloks achieved double-figures that earned the 96-72 victory over the Panthers. With the victory, Webster improves to 12-2 overall and extends unbeaten conference record to 5-0.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Principia exchanged baskets to a tie at seven apiece that included a free-throw by Kendall Horton and three-point baskets by Charles Nelson and Jemard Sykes II. Moments later, Nelson and Sykes II cashed in on layups that pushed the score to 11-7.  

With a one-point 11-10 advantage, the Gorloks constructed an 11-0 run for the 22-10 lead. In the run, Nelson recorded four points while Justin Ugo and Sebastian Reed added a layup each. The run was capped off with an and-one play by Horton. 

Immediately following the Gorlok run, the Panthers added a 7-1 run that pushed the score to 23-17. Midway through the opening half, the Gorloks stretched their lead back to double-digits at 27-17 on a layup by Reed and a pair of free-throws by Colin DeBold.  

Less than three minutes later, the Gorloks countered with a 12-2 run that generated the 39-24 lead. In the run, DeBold sank two three-point baskets while Adam Painter and Reed added a basket each as Dallas Harding-Fair and Sykes II contributed a free-throw each. 

The Gorloks closed out the first half with an 12-4 run that included seven points by Nelson and two points each from DeBold, Sykes II, and Nbaye Thiam that generated the 51-30 halftime lead. 

Webster and Principia opened the second half trading points to the score of 59-42 that included five points from the free-throw line from Harding-Fair, Horton, and Painter while Sykes II sank a three-point basket.  Moments later, the Panthers countered with an 11-3 run that cut the lead down 64-53. 

Between the minute marks of 11:42 and 9:41, Webster and Principia exchanged baskets to the score of 70-59 that included four points by Harding-Fair and a jumper by DeBold. Immediately following the back-and-forth play, the Gorloks constructed a 15-3 run that stretched the lead to 85-62. In the run, Nelson recorded five points while Sykes II added four points. In addition, Harding-Fair cashed in on two free-throws while Ugo capped off with four points. 

With less than five minutes to go, the Panthers added a 7-2 run that pushed the score to 87-69. The Gorloks closed out the game with a 9-3 run that included four points by Horton, a three-pointer by Painter, and a layup by Jalen Davis that generated the final score. 

For the game, Nelson led with 23 points while Sykes II recorded 15 points. DeBold contributed a career-high 12 points while Horton set a season-high 10 points as Painter added 10 points. At the glass, Sykes II led the team in rebounding as tied his season-high with nine rebounds while Ugo collected seven boards. Sykes II led the team with six assists as Horton dished out a season-high four assists. 

As a team, Webster outrebounded Principia 42-24, outscored the Panthers 29-16 in bench points and 19-5 on second chance points. 

The Gorloks will return home on Wednesday, January 14th hosting Eureka College for a conference decision starting at 7:30PM in Grant Gym.
