Sykes II Surpasses 1,000 Career Points In 84-66 Victory Over Eureka

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play by hosting Eureka College for a mid-week tilt Wednesday night in Grant Gym. Four Gorloks achieved double-figures that generated the 84-66 victory over the Red Devils. With the victory, Webster improves to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play. 

WU's Jemard Sykes II surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone with 18 points that included a team-high four three-pointers. In addition, he achieved his first double-double of the season by securing a season and team-high 10 rebounds and generated a season-high four steals.

Webster opened the game with the 15-3 advantage that included eight points by Sebastian Reed, five points by Adam Painter, and basket by Colin DeBold. Shortly later, the Gorloks and Red Devils traded baskets to the score of 20-8 that included five consecutive points by Charles Nelson

With under seven minutes to go in the first half, Eureka recorded a 5-0 run that pushed the score to 20-13. Following the run, the Gorloks and Red Devils exchanged baskets to the score of 28-20 that included five points by Justin Ugo, two points by Sykes II, a free-throw by Painter. The Gorloks closed out the final three minutes of the half with an 8-4 run that started on a basket by Sykes II. Moments later, Painter added a layup when Reed added back-to-back baskets that generated the 36-24 halftime lead. 

The Gorloks opened the second half with a 16-4 run that started on five consecutive points by Reed. Moments later, Sykes II knocked down a pair of three-pointers while Nelson added a three-pointer and a layup that stretched the lead to 52-28. Webster and Eureka continued back-and-forth play to the score of 58-34 that included baskets by Nelson, Painter, and Ugo. 

With 12 minutes to go, the Red Devils added a 14-6 run that pushed the score to 65-48 that included layups by Dallas Harding-Fair and Reed while Sykes II knocked down another three-pointer. With less than eight minutes on the clock, the Gorloks constructed an 11-0 run that included five points by Sykes II, two points each from Painter and Nelson, and a free-throw each from Reed and Nbaye Thiam that stretched the lead to 76-48. In the final five minutes of play, the Gorloks added eight points which included three points from Thiam, two points from Andrew Hall and Nkosi Constant, and a free-throw by Will Harmon that generated the final score. 

For the game and in addition to Sykes II, Reed recorded a game-high 20 points and a season-high seven rebounds. In addition, Nelson contributed 14 points and dished out four assists while Painter added 12 points and collected six rebounds.    

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, January 17th traveling to Greenville University with tipoff scheduled for 3:00PM in Greenville, Illinois.
