Webster Erases 20-point Second-Half Deficit With 33-2 Late Run To Stun Greenville 122-113; Gorloks Remain Undefeated In SLIAC Play At 7-0

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play with a trip to Greenville University on Saturday. The Gorloks erased a 20-point deficit with a monstrous 33-2 second half run that secured a 122-113 victory over the Panthers. With the victory over Greenville University. With the victory, Webster improves to 14-2 overall, 7-0 in conference play , and extends the win streak to eight games. 

Six Gorloks achieved double-figures which included double-doubles from Charles Nelson and Adam Painter. Nelson led the game with 26 points that included 10-of-11 from the free-throw line and dished out a career-high 11 assists. Painter recorded a career-high 24 points and collected a season-high 12 rebounds.  

Webster and Greenville opened the game trading baskets to a tie at eight apiece that included four points by Dallas Harding-Fair and a basket each from Sebastian Reed and Nelson. Moments later, the Panthers responded with a 7-0 run that pushed the score to 8-15. Following that Greenville run, Webster added a 7-2 run that cut the deficit to 15-17 on four points by Justin Ugo and three-pointer by Jacob Schafer

With a four-point deficit 15-19, the Gorloks responded with a 13-2 run that generated the 28-21 advantage. In the run, Painter contributed six points while Nelson and Reed added a basket. The run was capped off with an and-one play by Colin DeBold

Immediately following the Webster run, Greenville countered with a 10-2 run that made the score 31-30. Midway through the half, Harding-Fair and Painter added two points apiece that made the score 34-31. Moments later, the Panthers added an 8-0 run that generated the 34-39 deficit. Following that run, the Gorloks took the 41-40 on layups from Painter and Reed. 

With under seven minutes to go in the first half, the Panthers constructed a 12-3 run that generated the 43-53 deficit. Four minutes later, Painter and Nelson cut the deficit to 47-53 with consecutive layups. Moments later, Greenville added a 10-2 run that pushed the score to 49-63. In the final minute of the first half, Webster and Greenville traded points which included two points each from Nelson and Ugo while Painter added a free-throw that generated the 54-67 halftime score. 

Webster opened the second half with an 8-2 run on baskets from Painter, Harding-Fair, Jalen Davis, and Nelson that cut the deficit to 62-69. Following that Webster run, Greenville countered with a 16-4 run that made the score 66-85. Moments later, the Gorloks added a 6-3 run on layups from Ugo, Reed, and Nelson that pushed the score to 72-88. 

With under 12 minutes to go in regulation and down 19 points, the Gorloks erupted for a 33-2 run that spanned over eight minutes. The run started on a layup by Harding-Fair when Painter followed up with an add-one play. Following a basket by Greenville, Webster scored 28 unanswered points that included three free-throws by Nbaye Thiam and a layup by Painter. Moments later, the Gorloks added four consecutive layups that made the score 95-98; two by Jemard Sykes II and one each from Nelson and Thiam. 

Following a pair of free-throws by Reed, Ugo sank a free-throw that tied the game at 98 apiece. Shortly later, the Gorloks took the 102-98 lead on four made free-throws; two by Ugo and two by Sykes II. Webster capped off the run with four consecutive layups on two from Painter and one each from Sykes II and Nelson that generated the 110-98 lead. 

With under three minutes to go, the Gorloks and Panthers traded baskets to the score of 116-105 that included four points by Sykes II and a layup by Reed. In the final two minutes of play, the Panthers added a 6-2 run that made the score 118-111. In the final 20 seconds, the Gorloks put the game away at the free-throw line that included three from Nelson and one by Harding-Fair.   

In addition to Nelson and Painter, Reed contributed 16 points while Harding-Fair and Ugo added season-high of 15 points each as Sykes II chipped in 12 points. At the glass and in addition to Painter, Harding-Fair collected a season-high seven boards as Nelson matched Harding-Fair with seven. 

As a team, the Gorloks recorded seven season-highs in this decision which included 122 points, 90 points in the points, 81 field goals attempted, 47 made field goals, 38 free-throws attempted, 27 free-throws made, and 24 assists. 

The Gorloks will begin a two-game homestand on Thursday, January 24 hosting Mississippi University for Women at 7:30PM in Grant Gym.
