Painter’s Double-Double Help Lift Gorloks Past Owls 74-67; Gorloks Extend Unbeaten SLIAC Streak To Eight Games

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play with a home decision against MUW Thursday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks outdueled the Owls 74-67 led by Adam Painter's double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds (career-high). With the victory, Webster improves to 12-2 overall, extends their win streak to nine games, and remains unbeaten in conference play with an 8-0 record.    

Webster and MUW opened this decision exchanging baskets to a tie at 10 apiece that included four points by Painter and a basket each from Justin Ugo, Sebastian Reed, and Dallas Harding-Fair. Moments later, the Gorloks took the 14-10 lead on back-to-back layups by Kendall Horton and Painter. 

Following those baskets, the Owls responded with a 10-2 run that generated the 16-20 deficit for the Gorloks. Between the minute markers of 10:49 and 6:18, Webster and MUW traded points to the score of 27-23 that included two points each from Horton and Ugo while Harding-Fair added three consecutive points.

With under six minutes to go in the first half, the Owls stretched their lead to 32-23 with five quick points. Moments later, the Gorloks closed out the half with a 12-2 run that included six points by Charles Nelson, four points by Harding-Fair, and a layup by Painter for the 35-34 halftime lead. 

The Gorloks opened the second half with a 12-2 run that pushed the lead to 47-36  that included a pair of three-pointers by Jemard Sykes II, four points by Ugo, and two points by Reed. Moments later, the Owls responded with a 12-2 run of their own that made the score 49-48. Following the MUW run, Webster added a 10-4 run that started on a three-pointer by William Burroughs V as Harding-Fair and Painter cashed a basket each. Sykes II capped off the run with a three-point add-one play that generated the 59-52 lead. 

Midway through the half, the Owls added a 5-0 run that cut the Gorlok lead to 59-57. From the minute markers of 7:46 to 1:56, Webster and MUW traded baskets to the score of 71-67. In that span, Painter and Ugo contributed four points each while Reed and Nelson added two points each. Webster closed out the final minute and half of regulation with three clutch free-throws; two by Nelson and one by Harding-Fair that secured the victory. 

For the game and in addition to Painter, Ugo and Harding-Fair recorded 12 points and 7 rebounds each while Nelson added 10 points and a team-high eight assists. 

As a team, Webster shot 49.2 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road trip to Blackburn College on Wednesday, January 28th starting at 7:30pm in Carlinville, Illinois.
