Webster Pulls Away Late to Top Blackburn, 77-69; Stays Perfect in SLIAC Play With Ninth Consecutive Victory.

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University men's basketball team extended their conference win streak to nine games with a 77-69 victory over Blackburn College Wednesday evening. Four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Justin Ugo and Adam Painter with 14 points each. With the victory, Webster improves to 13-2 overall, 9-0 in conference, 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Blackburn exchanged baskets to a tie at 10 apiece. In that stretch, four Gorloks scored at least two points as Sebastian Reed led with four points. In addition, Painter and Ugo added a layup each while Dallas Harding-Fair sank a pair of free-throws. 

With the game tied at 10, Webster responded with an 8-0 run that started on a free-throw by Harding-Fair. Moments later, Charles Nelson added two free-throws when Kendall Horton followed up with a basket. WU's Jemard Sykes II capped off the run with a three-pointer that took the 18-10 lead. 

Immediately following the Webster run, Blackburn countered with a 12-0 run that included four three-pointers that generated the 18-22 deficit. With the four point deficit, WU's Nelson and Harding-Fair added consecutive baskets that tied the game at 22 apiece. Shortly later, Horton added a free-throw when Sykes II and Painter followed up with back-to-back layups that tied the game at 27 each. WU's Colin DeBold sank a three-pointer that gave Webster the 30-29 lead but Blackburn closed out the half with two baskets in the paint that generated the 30-33 halftime deficit. 

Webster and Blackburn opened the second half trading baskets to the deficit of 40-45. In that stretch, Sykes II knocked down a pair of three-pointers while Painter added two layups. Following a layup by Blackburn, the Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run that took the 48-47 lead that included five points by Nelson and a three-pointer by Sykes II.

Midway through the second half, Webster added a 10-5 run on five points each from Ugo and Jacob Schafer that took the 58-55 lead. Moments later, Blackburn countered with a 7-2 run that generated the 60-62 deficit. 

With a two-point deficit, the Gorloks closed out the final five minutes of the game with a 17-7 run that included seven free-throws made by Ugo, six points by Painter, and two points from Reed and Schafer that generated the victory.

In addition to Ugo and Painter, Nelson contributed 12 points while Sykes II added 11 points. WU's Reed recorded eight points while Schafer recorded a career-high seven points. As a team, Webster shot 50 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from behind the arc, and 73.1 percent from the free-throw line. 

The Gorloks will start a three-game homestand on Tuesday, February 3rd hosting Lyon College at 7:30PM in Grant Gym.
