Nelson’s Team-High 22 Points Leads Webster Past Lyon 77-69: Gorloks Secure 10th Consecutive SLIAC Victory

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball started a three-game homestand Tuesday evening by hosting Lyon College in Grant Gym. Four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Charles Nelson with 22 points that earned a 77-69 victory over the Scots. With the victory, Webster improves to 17-2 overall, remains perfect with 10-0 in SLIAC record, extends their win streak to 11 games, and generates a three-game lead in the current conference standings.

In the opening five minutes of play, Webster and Lyon battled to a tie at six apiece that included baskets from Justin Ugo, Dallas Harding-Fair and Nelson. For the next two and half minutes, the Gorloks and Scots traded baskets to the deficit of 11-13 which included a jumper from Nelson and three-pointer by Colin DeBold

With a two-point deficit, Webster responded with an 11-0 run that generated the 22-13 lead. In the run, Adam Painter, Sebastian Reed, Nelson, and Ugo added a basket each while DeBold capped off the run with a three-pointer. Immediately following the Webster run, Lyon countered with an 11-2 run that tied the game at 24 apiece.

With the game tied, Webster constructed a 18-4 run that generated the 42-28 lead. In the run, five different Gorloks scored which included six points from Jemard Sykes II, four points each from Ugo and Nelson, and two points each from Painter and Reed. The Gorloks closed out the final two minutes of the first half with a 7-4 run that included a three-pointer by Nelson and consecutive layups by Harding-Fair which generated the 49-32 halftime lead.

The Scots opened the second half with a 6-2 run that pushed the score to 51-38 as Sykes II added a layup. For the next four minutes, Webster and Lyon traded points to the score of 56-43 which included a free-throw by Kendall Horton and a basket each from Harding-Fair and Nelson. 

With under 13 minutes to go, Webster added a 7-2 run that stretched the lead to 63-45 that started on a pair of free-throws by Ugo. Moments later, Harding-Fair completed an and-one play as Painter capped off the run with a layup. Shortly later, the Scots countered with a 15-4 run that cut the lead to 67-60. 

With just over four minutes left on clock, the Gorloks and Scots traded baskets to the score 75-69 that included four points by Nelson and two points each from Ugo and Painter. In the final minute of regulation, Nelson and Ugo sank a free-throw each that secured the victory.  

For the game, Nelson led the team with 22 points on 10-14 from the field, and secured four rebounds and four steals. Ugo and Harding-Fair recorded 13 points, two rebounds, and one block each. Painter rounded double-figure scorers with 10 points while recording a team-high seven rebounds and a career-high six steals.  

As a team, Webster outscored Lyon 48-20 with points in the paint, 23-14 in bench points, and 22-14 on points off turnovers.

The Gorloks will contiunue their three-game conference homestand on Thursday, February 5 hositng Spalding University at 7:30PM in Grant Gym.
