Nelson’s Season-High 28 Points Propels Gorloks Past Spalding 72-67; Gorloks Extend Unbeaten SLIAC Win Streak to 11 Games

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued their three-game homestand by hosting Spalding University Thursday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks closed out the game with a 10-0 run that secured the 72-67 victory over Spalding. WU's Charles Nelson led the team with a season-high 28 points that included a team-high four three-pointers. With the victory, Webster improves to 18-2 overall and extends undefeated SLIAC record to 11-0. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Spalding exchanged baskets to a tie at 10 apiece that included eight consecutive points by Nelson that including two three-pointers and a layup by Kendall Horton. Moments later, Jemard Sykes II put the Gorloks on top at 14-10 with a pair of free-throws and a layup. Less than a minute later, Spalding added consecutive baskets that tied the game at 14 apiece. With the game tied, the Gorloks recorded an 8-0 run to the lead of 22-14 that started on a three-pointer by Nelson. Shortly later, Adam Painter added a layup when Sebastian Reed capped it off with an and-one play. 

Midway through the opening half, the Golden Eagles countered with a 15-2 run that generated the 24-29 deficit. With under five minutes to go, the Gorloks added a 6-2 run that cut the deficit to 30-31 on a free-throw by Justin Ugo, a layup by Painter, and a three-pointer by Sykes II. Spalding closed out the first half with a 5-2 run that generated the 32-36 halftime deficit. 

Spalding opened the second half with an 11-5 run to the score of 37-47 as Ugo added four points while Sykes II sank a free-throw. Immediately following that run, Webster countered with a 10-2 run that included six points by Nelson and a basket each from Painter and Dallas Harding-Fair that cut the deficit to 47-49. Moments later, Nelson recorded five consecutive points for Webster that cut the deficit to 52-54. With the deficit, Sykes II got fouled and tied the game at 54 apiece with a pair of free-throws. After a basket by Spalding, Nelson recorded four consecutive points that put the Gorloks back on top at 58-56. 

With just over seven minutes remaining on the clock, Spalding recorded an 11-4 run that generated the 62-67 deficit. In the final four minutes of regulation, the Gorloks closed out the game with a 10-0 run that started on a layup by Painter. Following the Painter layup, Nelson sank a pair of free-throws that made the score 66-67. On the next Gorlok possession, Sykes II splashed a three-pointer that put the Gorloks on top at 69-67.  In the final minute of play, Painter and Ugo closed out the game at the free-throw line that secured the victory. 

In addition to Nelson, Sykes II contributed 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. WU's Painter and Ugo recorded nine points each while Painter led the team with three assists.  

The Gorloks will close out this three-game homestand on Saturday, February 7 hosting Principia College 3:00PM in Grant Gym for Senior Day.
