Nelson’s Game-Winner Lifts Webster Past Spalding 71-69; Gorloks Extend Unbeaten SLIAC Win Streak To Four Games

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Webster University men's basketball team started a two-game conference roadstand with a trip to Spalding University Wednesday evening. The Gorloks outdueled the Golden Eagles 71-69 to remain undefeated in conference play. WU's Charles Nelson led the team with 22 points which included the game-winning shot with three seconds on the clock. With the victory, Webster improves to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. 

Webster and Spalding opened this decision trading points in the paint to a tie at six piece which included baskets by Nelson, Dallas Harding-Fair, and Adam Painter. With a two-point deficit at 6-8, Webster responded with an 8-2 run that took the 14-10 advantage. In the run, Nelson knocked down a three-pointer, Painter added a layup, and Sebastian Reed converted on a three-point play with the add-one free-throw. Following the Webster run, Spalding countered with an 8-0 run that generated the 14-18 deficit. 

With under eight minutes to go in the opening half, the Gorloks added a 6-2 run on a pair of free-throws by Colin DeBold and a basket from Nelson and Painter that tied the game at 20 apiece. For the final five minutes of the first half, Painter contributed four points while Jemard Sykes II and Kendall Horton added a basket each that generated the halftime score of 28 apiece. 

Webster and Spalding opened the second half trading baskets that included five points by Nelson and a layup by Horton. Moments later, Spalding added a dunk and three-pointer that generated the 35-41 deficit. With the deficit, the Gorloks erupted for a 17-4 run and took the 52-45 advantage. In the run, Sykes II drained a pair of three-pointers while Nelson added one for himself. In addition, Painter, Reed, and Harding-Fair added two points apiece when Horton capped off the run with a pair of free-throws. Immediately following the Webster run, Spalding constructed an 11-5 run that pushed the score to 57-56 which included a three-pointer by Sykes II and a jumper by Nelson. 

Between the minute marks of 6:45 and 2:36, the Gorloks outscored the Golden Eagles 12-6 which generated the score of 69-62 lead. In that span, Sykes II and Nelson contributed three points each while Harding-Fair, Painter, and Reed added a basket. 

Over the next two minutes of play, Spalding fought back with a 7-0 run and tied the game at 69 apiece. With the game tied, Spalding missed a free-throw when Painter came down with the rebound as Webster called a timeout. Following the timeout, Nelson collected the inbound pass just before mid court. With eight seconds on the clock, Nelson sliced through two Spalding defenders at the top of key and weaved around another defender when he cashed the driving layup with three seconds on the clock. Spalding's last second half-court heave fell short which generated the final score.     

For the game and in addition to Nelson, Painter and Sykes II recorded 14 points each while Reed added seven points off the bench. Harding-Fair and Horton contributed six points each. At the glass, Painter led the team with seven while Sykes II and Harding-Fair secured six each.  

The Gorloks will close out this conference roadstand on Saturday, January 10 with a visit to Principia College starting at 3:00PM in Elsah, Illinois.
