Balance Attack Lifts Gorloks To Commanding 89-42 Victory Over Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Eureka College Wednesday evening. The Gorloks had four student-athletes achieve double-figures which propelled to an 89-42 victory over the Red Devils. With the victory, Webster improves 14-8 overall and 11-2 in SLIAC play.  

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster jumped out to the early 8-2 lead on a pair of free-throws by Miya Webb, a layup by Meghan Illingworth, and back-to-back layups by Kaimyla Nolen. Immediately following the Webster run, Eureka responded with a 9-1 run that generated the 11-9 deficit. 

With just over three minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 12-0 run that started on free-throws by Emma Smith. Moments later, Daijah Jones made a layup when Emily Kerce followed up with a three-pointer. Shortly after that basket, Grace Hupp sank a pair of free-throws when Jones followed up with a free-throw. Kerce capped off the run with a pair of free-throws that generated the 21-11 advantage. 

Webster opened the second quarter with a 19-3 run to the 40-14 advantage led by Illingworth with eight points while Webb added seven points as Akaela Caquelin and Kerce contributed two points each. From the 3:06 minute marker in the first quarter to the 3:31 marker in the second quarter, the Gorloks recorded a 31-3 run. Webster and Eureka closed out the final three and half minutes of the quarter trading points which generated the 46-21 halftime lead.

The Gorloks opened the second half with a 10-0 run that pushed the lead to 56-21 which included five points by Illingworth, four points from Webb, and a free-throw by Nolen. Following a three-pointer by Eureka, Webster constructed a 14-3 run that pushed the lead to 70-27 that started on five consecutive points by Caquelin. Moments later, Kerce and Chassity McCammon added layups when Kerce capped off the run with five straight points. WU's Smith closed out the quarter scoring for the Gorloks with a layup that generated the 72-31 lead.

Webster opened the final quarter with an 11-0 run that pushed the lead to 83-31 that started on a three-pointer by Peyton Dolan. Moments later, the Gorloks added four layups; one each by Illingworth, Smith, Kerce, and Hupp. In the final five minutes and 16 seconds, the Gorloks added six points which included a free-throw by Terryn Ford, a layup by Addison Price, and a three-pointer by Mattie Jones.  

For the game, Illingworth recorded a team-high 17 points and two blocks while Kerce contributed a season-high 16 points. In addition, Webb recorded 13 points, a season-high seven steals, and three assists. WU's Smith recorded career-highs of 10 points and seven rebounds while Caquelin added eight points and collected a career-high 11 rebounds. D. Jones recorded a career-high eight assists and added three points. As a team, Webster shot 50.8 percent from the field and a season-best 45.5 percent from three. In addition, the Gorloks tied their season-high of 24 assists 

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, February 14th hosting Greenville University at 1:00PM for Senior Day.
