Women’s Basketball Rally Late To Edge Greenville 67-62 On Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team conference play by hosting Greenville University for their regular season home finale on Saturday for Senior Day. The Gorloks battled the Panthers tightly and rallied with an late 18-3 run that led to a 67-62 victory. With the victory, Webster improves to 15-8 overall, 12-2 in conference play, and tied for first in the SLIAC standings.  

Prior to the game, the Webster University coaching staff honored seniors Miya Webb, Grace Hupp, Claire Williams and student-manager Alyssa Gilchrist for their contributions to the program.

Webster and Greenville opened the game battling to the 8-7 Gorlok advantage which included three layups; two by Meghan Illingworth and one by Williams while Kaimyla Nolen sank a pair of free-throws. Midway through the quarter, the Panthers added an 8-2 run to the score of 10-15 as Chassity McCammon. In the final minute and a half of the quarter, the Gorloks countered with an 8-2 run of their own that started on a layup by Webb. Moments later, Emma Smith splashed a three-pointer when Emily Kerce followed up with three points that put Webster on top at 18-17. 

The Panthers opened the second quarter with a three-pointer but the Gorloks responded with back-to-back baskets by McCammon and Webb that made the score 22-20. Moments later, Greenville added a 10-3 run that generated the 25-30 deficit that included a three-pointer by Hupp. With less than four minutes to go in the first half, the Gorloks added a 6-2 run that cut the deficit to 31-32. In the run, the Gorloks sank three free-throws; one by Hupp and two by Webb as Smith capped it off with a three-pointer. The Gorloks and Panthers closed out the quarter exchanging points which included three points by Daijah Jones and a pair of free-throws by Hupp that generated the 36-39 halftime deficit.

Webster opened the second half scoring with a three-point play by Illingworth that tied that game at 39 apiece. Shortly later, the Panthers added a 6-0 run that generated the 39-45 deficit. Moments later, Webster cut the deficit to 43-45 on a three-pointer by Hupp and free-throw by Jones. Approximately midway through the quarter, the Panthers added a 6-2 run that stretched their lead to 45-51. The Gorloks closed out the final two minutes and 10 seconds of the quarter with a 8-2 run that tied the game 53 apiece that included five points by Williams, a pair of free-throws by Hupp, and a free-throw by Illingworth. 

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with a 10-1 run that started on four consecutive points by Kerce. Following a free-throw by Greenville, the Gorloks closed out the run with a pair of free-throws by Illingworth and two layups by Smith that generated the 63-54 lead. With three and a half minutes to go, Greenville rallied for an 8-3 run that pushed the score to 66-62. In the final minute of play, the Gorloks defense held strong as Jones added a free-throw that sealed the victory. 

For the game, Illingworth recorded 12 points and grabbed four rebounds. In addition, Smith recorded a career-high 12 points while Hupp scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Webb tallied six points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

As a team, Webster outscored Greenville 40-28 in bench points and 27-13 on points off turnovers. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road trip to Lyon College on Thursday, February 19 starting at 5:30PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
