Gorloks Pull Away In Second Half To Defeat Lyon 77-65; Webster Secure 13th SLIAC Victory

BATESVILLLE, Ark. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Lyon College on Thursday. The Gorloks pulled away in the second half to defeat the Scots 77-65. With the victory, Webster improves to 16-8 overall, 13-2 conference play, and currently tied for first in the SLIAC standings.

In the opening minutes of play, Lyon jumped out the early 7-2 lead but Webster added with a 7-0 run for the 9-7 lead. WU's Meghan Illingworth started the Gorloks scoring with consecutive baskets while Kaimyla Nolen as Akaela Caquelin sank a three-pointer. Approximately midway through the quarter, the Scots responded with a 10-0 run that generated the 9-17 deficit. The Gorloks and Scots closed out the quarter trading six points to the score of 15-22 that included a layup by Illingworth, a free-throw by Daijah Jones, and another three-pointer by Caquelin. 
   
Lyon opened the second quarter with consecutive jumpers that stretched the deficit to 15-26. Moments later, Webster erupted for an 18-3 run that started on a three-point play by Illingworth. Shortly later, Caquelin and Claire Williams added a three-pointer each that made the score 24-29. The run continued with layups by Illingworth and Williams. 

With just over two minutes to go in the quarter, Illingworth sank a jumper that put the Gorloks on top at 30-29 while Emma Smith capped off the run with three points for the 33-29 lead. The Scots closed out the final minute and 15 seconds of the half with a 6-2 run that generated the halftime score of 35 apiece. 
   
Webster opened the second half with a 10-6 run that took a 45-41 advantage which included baskets by Williams and Miya Webb and three-pointers by Peyton Dolan and Smith. Shortly later, Webster stretched their lead to six at 51-45 on baskets by Webb and Illingworth and a pair of free-throws by Addison Price. With under two minutes to go in the quarter, Lyon cut the lead to 51-48 with an and-one play. However, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run with three free-throws (Illingworth 1, Webb 2) and a jumper by Williams for the 56-48 lead. 

In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 62-50 with a 6-0 run on six consecutive points by Smith. Shortly later, Nolen and Willaims added a jumper each that made the score 66-52. Following those baskets, Lyon countered with an 11-4 run that pushed the score to 70-63 that included two free-throws by Illingworth and a layup by Caquelin. In the final minute of the game, the Gorloks put the game away for good with a 7-2 run on free-throws by Webb and Williams and three points by Caquelin that generated the final score.   

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Illingworth with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season). Williams recorded a career-high 15 points while Caquelin contributed 14 points. Smith rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points and had a career-high two blocks.
