Women’s Basketball Secures SLIAC Regular Season Title With 68-53 Victory Over MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a visit to Mississippi University for Women on Saturday. The Gorlok dominated the paint and surged past MUW by the score of 68-53. With the victory, the Gorloks secured their seventh consecutive SLIAC Regular Season title! Webster improves to 17-8 overall, 14-2 in conference, and extends their win streak to four games.

Webster opened the game with the 6-2 lead that included a layup by Kaimyla Nolen, three points from Meghan Illingworth, and a free-throw by Claire Williams. Shortly later, the Owls took the 7-6 lead on consecutive baskets. With approximately six and a half minutes to go in the quarter, the Gorloks recorded a 15-4 run that started on consecutive layups by Miya Webb and Illingworth for the 10-7 lead. Moments later, Webb cashed a three-pointer when Illingworth and Chassity McCammon added a jumper each. Following four consecutive points by MUW, Emma Smith closed out the quarter scoring with a jumper for the 21-11 advantage. 

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with another 6-2 run that stretched the lead to 27-11 on four points from Williams and a tip-in by Illingworth. With just under five and a half minutes to go in the half, MUW chipped back with a 9-0 run that cut the lead to 27-22. Shortly later, the Gorloks closed out the half with a 10-4 run that included six points by Illingworth and four by Williams which generated the 37-25 halftime lead.  The Owls opened the second half scoring with a pair of free-throws but the Gorloks countered with a 9-1 run that started on a layup by Noloen. Following a free-throw by the Owls, Akaela Caqulein recorded five consecutive points when Webb capped off the run with a layup that increased the lead to 46-28. 

Following a three-pointer by MUW, Webster added a 6-0 run to the 52-31 on layups by Nolen and Williams and a jumper by Daijah Jones. The Gorloks and Owls closed out the quarter exchanging five points apiece as all five came from Caquelin that generated the lead of 57-36. MUW opened the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run to the score of 61-50 that included all four points by Illingworth. The Gorloks closed out the game with a 7-2 run on a layup by Webb, a three-pointer by Caquelin, and a pair of free-throws by Illingworth that generated the final score. 

For the game, Illingworth led the team with 21 points while collecting six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Caquelin contributed 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc and three rebounds. Williams added 11 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Webb contributed nine points, collected team-highs of eight rebounds and five steals while dishing out three assists. 

With the victory, Webster will host the 2025-26 SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament (semifinals and championship game) starting on Friday, February 27th at 5:30pm in Grant Gym.
