Men’s Basketball Set New All-Time Single-Season Wins Record With 21 Wins In 122-93 Victory Over Greenville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play on Saturday by hosting Greenville University. The Gorloks got out to a double-digit lead early and scored 61 points in each half that secured a 122-93 victory over the Panthers. With the victory, Webster broke the all-time single-season wins record with 21 wins, improves to 14-0 overall in conference play, and tied the program record with 15 consecutive wins.

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster jumped out to an early 9-2 advantage on a layup by Justin Ugo, a three-pointer by Kendall Horton, and four consecutive points by Nbaye Thiam. Moments later, Greenville added a 6-0 run that made the score 9-8. Shortly later, the Gorloks countered with a 14-3 run that stretched their lead to 23-11 lead that included nine points by Jemard Sykes II, a three-pointer by Charles Nelson, and was capped off with a layup by Adam Painter.

With under 13 minutes to go in the half, Webster and Greenville traded baskets to the score of 33-21 that included layups by Dallas Harding-Fair, Thiam, and Painter (two) while Horton and Sykes II added a point each from the line. Shortly later, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 16 at 39-23 with a 6-0 run that included jumpers by Nelson and a layup by William Burroughs V.  

With less than six minutes to go, the Panthers chipped back with a 15-6 run that pushed the score to 47-41 which included four points by Sebastian Reed and a layup by Painter. Webster closed out the first half with a 14-4 run that included eight points by Ethan Chartrand and two points each from Nelson, Reed, and Thiam for the 61-45 halftime lead. 

Webster and Greenville opened the second half trading baskets to the score of 65-50 which included dunks by Painter and Ugo. Moments later, the Gorloks recorded a 23-8 run that stretched the lead to 88-58. In the run, Nelson recorded five points while Sykes II, Chartrand, and Reed added four points each while Ugo, Harding-Fair, and Burroughs V added a layup each. Immediately following the Webster run, Greenville chipped back with a 19-4 run that made the score 92-76 as Ugo and Reed scored two points each. 

With less than eight minutes to go, the Gorloks constructed a 26-11 run that increased the lead to 118-87. In the run, Chartrand led with 12 points while Nelson added four points. In addition, Sykes II, Harding-Fair, Burroughs V, and Nkosi Constant added a basket each while Jalen Davis and Reed contributed a free-throw each. WU's Constant and Andrew Hall closed out the scoring for Webster with a basket each. 

For the game, five Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Chartrand with 24 points off the bench. In addition, Nelson recorded 20 points, eight assists (team-high), and four rebounds. Also, Sykes II contributed 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Reed added 13 points and four rebounds while Painter scored 10 points while securing five rebounds and dished out three assists. Horton added four points and a season-high seven assists.

As a team, Webster outscored Greenville 86-44, 39-10 in fast break points, and 64-41 in bench points. In addition, the Gorloks shot a season-best 67.6 percent from the field, tied their season-high of 122 points, and dished out a season-high 35 assists.

The Gorloks will close out the regular season with a two-game roadstand; starting with a decision against Lyon College on Thursday, February 19 at 7:30PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
