Men’s Basketball Set A New Program Record With 15th Consecutive SLIAC Wins With 77-63 Victory Over Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference with a road trip to Lyon College on Thursday. The Gorloks set a new program record with 15 consecutive conference wins with a 77-63 victory over the Scots. With the victory, Webster improves to 22-2 overall and 15-0 in conference play.

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster jumped out to the early 9-0 advantage that included four points by Charles Nelson, a three-pointer by Jemard Sykes II, and a layup by Justin Ugo. Moments later, Lyon chipped back with an 18-11 run that pushed the score to a two-point Webster lead at 22-20 as Ethan Chartrand scored all 11 points for the Gorloks. 

With approximately eight minutes to go in the half, the Scots added a 10-4 run that took the 30-26 lead as Nelson and Adam Painter added a basket each. The Gorloks closed out the final three minutes of the half with an 11-2 run that started on baskets in the paint by Dallas Harding-Fair and Nbaye Thiam. Moments later, Nelson added five consecutive points then Sebastian Reed capped off the run with a pair of free-throws that generated the 37-32 halftime advantage. 

Lyon opened the second half scoring with a jumper but Webster countered with an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 45-34 on a basket each from Nelson, Painter, Ugo, and Sykes II. Shortly later, the Gorloks stretched the lead to 51-37 with a 6-0 run that included four points by Chartrand and a basket by Nelson. 

With 12 minutes to go, Lyon chipped back an 8-2 run that pushed the score to 53-45. Following the run, Ugo added consecutive baskets for Webster that increased the lead to 57-45. Shortly later, the Gorloks added an 11-3 run that started on an and-one play by Nelson. Following that play, Harding-Fair sank a jumper when Ugo added four consecutive points. The run was capped off with a layup by Nelson that pushed the lead to 68-51. 

With two minutes to go, Lyon recorded a 9-4 run that cut the lead to 72-60. However, the Gorloks closed out the game shooting five-of-six at the free-throw line as Nelson made four and Harding-Fair sank one which generated the final score. 

For the game, Nelson led the team with 27 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high three blocks. In addition, Chartrand recorded 18 points and two steals off the bench while Ugo contributed 12 points.
