Men’s Basketball Drop Regular Season Finale To MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a road decision at Mississippi University for Women on Saturday. The Gorloks battled the Owls but fell short by the score of 60-80. Webster moves to 22-3 overall and 15-1 in conference play. 

In the opening minutes of the game, Webster and MUW exchanged points to a tie at seven apiece that included a jumper by Justin Ugo and five consecutive points by Jemard Sykes IIMoments later, the Owls recorded an 18-5 run that generated the 12-25 deficit which included a three-pointer by Charles Nelson and a layup by Ethan Chartrand. Shortly later, the Gorloks chipped back with a 6-0 run that cut the deficit to 18-25 that included four points by Chartrand and a tip-in by Nbaye Thiam

With six and a half minutes to go in the opening half, the Owls added a 10-2 run that generated the 20-35 deficit. In the final three minutes of the half, Webster and MUW added a basket each which included a layup by Nelson for the halftime score of 22-37. 

The Owls opened the second half with a 12-4 run that pushed the score to 26-49 which included baskets by Adam Painter and Ugo. Moments later, the Gorloks chipped with a 7-0 run on five points from Nelson and two free-throws by Sebastian Reed that made the score 33-49. With less than 14 minutes to go, the Owls added a 9-6 run that made the score 39-58 which included four points by Chartrand and two by Nelson. Midway through the second half, Webster added an 11-0 run that cut the deficit to 50-63. In the run, Nelson recorded the first four four points when Chartrand capped off the run with seven consecutive points. 

With under seven minutes to go, MUW added a 17-5 run to the score of 55-80 which included a layup by Sykes II, a tip-in by Nkosi Constant, and a free-throw from Kendall Horton. The Gorloks added the final points of the game with a three-pointer by Andrew Hall and a layup by Horton that generated the final score. 

For the game, Chartrand led the team with 17 points while collecting five rebounds and two steals. Nelson contributed 16 points, secured four rebounds, and led the team with four assists. Sykes II added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

With the Gorloks winning the regular season two weeks ago, Webster will host the 2025-26 SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament (semifinals and championship game) starting Thursday, February 26 at 5:30pm in Grant Gym.
