Webb’s Game-Winning Layup Secures 64-62 Victory Over Scots; Webster Extends SLIAC Win Streak To Seven Games.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened the three-game conference homestand by hosting Lyon College Tuesday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks edged the Scots 64-62 on a game-winning layup by Miya Webb with nine seconds remaining. With the victory, Webster improves to 12-7 overall, 9-1 in SLIAC play, and extends their conference win streak to seven games.

In the opening minutes of action, Webster jumped to the early 9-0 lead on two-point baskets by Kaimyla Nolen, Meghan Illingworth, and Peyton Dolan and three-pointer by Claire Williams. Moments later, Lyon recorded a 10-4 run that pushed the score to 13-10 as Williams and Emma Smith added a basket each. Webster closed out the final four minutes of the quarter with an 11-0 run that generated the 24-10 lead. In the run, five different Gorloks scored a basket which came from Akaela Caquelin, Emily Kerce, Daijah Jones, Dolan (3pter), and Grace Hupp

Lyon opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run that pushed the score to 28-20 as Williams added another three-pointer while Nolen sank a free-throw. The game continued with back-and-forth play to the 40-31 lead that included four points by Webb, three points by Caquelin, two points from Illingworth and Smith while Hupp sank a free-throw. Lyon closed out the final 56 seconds of the first half with a 6-1 run that generated the 41-37 halftime lead.   

Webster opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run that took the 50-37 lead which included seven points from Dolan (two three-pointers) and a layup by Illingworth. For the final seven minutes of the quarter, Lyon countered with a 12-0 run that pushed the lead to 50-49.  

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with baskets from Webb and Nolen that generated the 54-49 lead. Moments later, Lyon's Natalya Kaza sank consecutive three-point baskets that made the score 54-55. Shortly later, Illingworth and Williams sank a pair of free-throws that put the Gorloks back on top at 58-55. 

Approximately midway through the quarter, Lyon added a 5-0 run that generated the 58-60 deficit. With less than three minutes to go, Kerce added a layup that tied the game at 60 apiece. Moments later, Lyon sank a jumper that made the score 60-62. With just over a minute on the clock, Kerce added a layup that tied the game at 62 apiece. With the game tied, Webb drove to the cup and sank the layup with nine seconds left which secured the victory. 

For the game, Dolan led the team with 12 points that included three triples while adding two assists. Williams recorded 10 points, collected 4 rebounds, and had two assists. Webb contributed nine points, six rebounds, and a season-high six assists. WU's Caquelin contributed five points and collected team-highs of eight rebounds and four steals. 

As a team, Webster outscored Lyon 26-16 with points in the paint, 20-9 in bench points, and 15-9 with points off turnovers. 

The Gorloks will be back in Grant Gym on Thursday, February 5 hosting Spalding University at 5:30PM.
