Gorloks Secure Eighth Straight Conference Victory With 45-41 Win Over Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball continued their three-game homestand with the middle stanza decision against Spalding University Thursday evening in Grant Gym. The Gorloks battled past the Golden Eagles 45-41 and earned their eight straight conference victory. With the victory, Webster improves to 13-7 overall and 10-1 overall in SLIAC play. 

Spalding opened the game with the first basket but Webster responded with a 10-0 run that started on a three-pointer by Claire Wiliams. Moments later, Meghan Illingworth and Miya Webb followed up with consecutive layups while Emma Smith capped off the run with a three-pointer that took the 10-2 advantage. With less than four minutes to go in the quarter, Spalding added four points that pushed the score to 10-6. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run on a three-pointer by Williams and a layup by Emily Kerce that pushed the lead to 15-6.    

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run which pushed the lead to 22-6 lead on a layup by Kaimyla Nolen and five consecutive points by Illingworth. Following the Webster run, Spalding added a 7-2 run that made the score 24-13. With under two and a half minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks stretched their lead to 29-13 on a three-pointer by Akaela Caquelin and a layup by Illingworth. However, the Golden Eagles closed out the first half with an 8-0 run that generated the 29-21 halftime lead.

Webster and Spalding opened the third quarter with layups that pushed the score to 31-25. Approximately midway through the quarter, the Gorloks added an 8-1 run on a layup by Kerce and back-to-back three-pointers by Smith and Williams that stretched the lead to 39-26. Following that basket, Spalding added four consecutive points that pushed the score to 39-30. WU's Caquelin closed out the quarter scoring with a three-pointer that generated the 42-30 lead.  

The Golden Eagles opened the final quarter with an 11-2 run that pushed the score to a three-point Gorlok lead at 44-41. From the 5:16 minute mark to five seconds remaining on the game, neither team scored a point. With a one-possession game and five seconds left on the clock, Webb got fouled, went to the free-throw line, and sank a free-throw that put the game away. 

For the game, Illingworth led the team with 11 points as Williams added nine points (3-of-6 from deep). Kerce, Smith, and Caquelin contributed six points each. Webb recorded three points, collected a team-high five rebounds, and dished out a season-high and team-high six assists. As a team, Webster outscored Spalding 27-10 on points off turnovers and 18-8 in bench points. 

The Gorloks will close out this homestand on Saturday, February 7th hosting Principia College at 1:00PM in Grant Gym.
