Illingworth’s Season High 24 Points & Career High 12 Rebounds Not Enough In Defeat To Principia

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team concluded their three-game homestand by hosting Principia College for the Pink Out Game on Saturday. The Gorloks battled the Panthers closely but fell just short by the score of 55-59. WU's Meghan Illingworth recorded her first double-double of the season with a season-high 24 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. With the defeat, Webster moves to 13-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play. 

In the opening four minutes of action, Webster jumped out to the early 9-2 that included a three-pointer by Claire Williams and six consecutive points by Illingworth. Midway through the quarter, Peyton Dolan and Illingworth stretched the lead to 13-4 with back-to-back baskets. The Panthers closed out the quarter with a 7-4 run that made the score 17-11 as Illingworth had all four points.  

Webster opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run that started on a jumper by Illingworth. Following a free-throw by Miya Webb, Illingworth added a layup when Akaela Caquelin capped off the run with back-to-back three-pointers that stretched the lead to 28-13. However, Principia closed out the final three and half minutes of the first half with a 10-2 run that generated the 30-23 halftime score. 

Webster and Principia opened the second half trading points to the score of 39-31 that included six points by Illingworth and three free-throws by Kaimyla Nolen. For the final three and half minutes in the quarter, the Panthers added a 10-2 run that tied the game at 41 apiece.  

Webb opened the fourth quarter scoring with a three-pointer that put the Gorloks on top at 44-41. However, the Panthers recorded a 9-0 run that generated the 44-50 deficit. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks cut the deficit to 48-50 that included a three-pointer by Caquelin and free-throw by Illingworth. Shortly later, Principia added four free-throws that pushed the score to 49-54.

With a five-point deficit and just over a minute left in regulation, Dolan and Caquelin sank back-to-back three-pointers that put the Gorloks on top at 55-54. However, the Panthers closed out the final 30 seconds of the game with five consecutive points which generated the loss. 

In addition to Illingworth, Caquelin recorded nine points (3-of-7 from deep) and secured eight rebounds while Williams contributed eight points and a team-high four assists. 

The Gorloks continue conference play on Wednesday, February 11 with a visit to Eureka College starting at 5:30PM in Eureka, Illinois.
