(Greenville, Ill.) – The Webster University Gorloks used a big run to start the second half in its 79-56 win over Greenville on Wednesday night. With the win Webster remains undefeated in conference play and in a first place tie with Westminster.
The opening frame was a tightly contested frame which saw nine lead changes and seven ties in the first 12 minutes. The Gorloks (8-5, 5-0 SLIAC) retook the lead at the 7:11 mark on a lay-up by Brad Robinson. WU would eventually stretch its lead to 32-24 heading into the intermission. Webster’s defense held the top shooting three point team in the conference to only 1-of-6 from behind the arc in the half. The Gorloks were 12-of-27 (44 percent) from the floor while the Panthers (5-7, 2-3 SLIAC) shot 42 percent (10-for-24) from the field.
Webster opened the second half knocking down nine of its first 12 shots in a 20-5 run to extend its halftime lead to 52-29. WU got a balanced scoring effort to start the half with all the starters recording at least a bucket. The Gorloks built their lead to as much as 25 points midway through the second half but the Panthers clawed back to within 65-49 at the 4:47 mark but would get no closer as Webster extended its lead back to 25 points and cruised to the victory.
The Gorloks got a balanced effort offensively as four starters reached double figures in scoring led by Darin Hoggatt with 19 points. Ryan Turk and Robinson had 13 apiece while Luke Niebrugge chipped in with 11.
