Gorlok women drop first home contest 74-51 to Maryville

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster University Gorloks women’s team dropped its first home contest of the season 74-51 to Maryville on Wednesday evening.
The Gorloks (7-8, 2-5 SLIAC) stayed close with the Saints (12-3, 7-0 SLIAC) early and actually led 5-4 before Maryville took control with a 22-2 run spanning over 11 minutes. Webster’s defense did not have an answer for the duo of Megan McCabe and Allie Wilhelm as they combined to score 14 points during one stretch of the half. Offensively, Webster continued its struggles on the offensive end missing 12 out of 13 shots at one point in the frame while turning it over 19 times. The Saints took advantage of those turnovers turning them into 19 points. Despite the height difference Webster held its own on the glass only being out rebounded 20-19.
The second half was more of the same as Maryville opened strong on its way to a 60-31 midway through the frame. WU would trail by as much as 33 points in the stanza but finished the game strong outscoring the Saints 14-4 in the final five minutes of the game. The Gorloks continued to have a tough time holding onto the ball turning it over 12 more times resulting in a 37-10 advantage for Maryville in points off turnovers. Webster continued its scrappiness on the boards finishing the contest being out rebounded by a 39-38 margin.
Danielle Martin had 11 points to lead the way for the Gorloks while Michelle McQueen finished with 10.
