(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks used a 22-3 run spanning over 10 minutes to defeat the Prinicpia Panthers, 78-59 on Saturday afternoon in Elsah, Ill. Darin Hoggatt and Brad Robinson had a big second half combining to score 19 points including 14 in the decisive run.
The Gorloks (5-4, 2-0 SLIAC) and Panthers (2-5, 1-2 SLIAC) shot the ball equally well through the games first seven minutes with Webster clinging to a 17-16 advantage. After a three point basket by Ryan Turk the game was delayed by nearly 10 minutes due to the lights going out. When play resumed the Gorloks continued their good shooting and extend the lead to seven points. After trading buckets WU seized control with a 13-0 run push the lead to 40-23 with less than four minutes to play. PC answered back however with a long run of their own and actually cut Webster’s lead to 40-35 at the break.
The Gorloks shot the ball at a 42 percent (15-of-36) clip but Principia was even better connecting on 12-of-20 (60 percent) from the floor in the frame. WU had a 17-14 edge on the boards leading to eight second chance points and forced 11 Panther turnovers turning those into 13 points.
The second stanza started the same way the first one did with each side answering the other’s shot bucket for bucket. PC took its first lead since early in the contest on an old fashioned three-point play by Reeves McLauglin at the 15:46 mark. Corey Kuhn gave Webster back the lead momentarily before a three pointer by Sam Doughlas put Prinicpia up 50-48 its final lead of the game. Robinson’s jumper tied the game at 50 and kickstarted WU’s long run in which it would not trail the rest of the way. During that run the Gorloks defense held the Panthers to just 1-of-10 shooting and forced nine turnovers.
Hoggatt finished the game with 18 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead four Webster players in double digits. Turk dropped in 14, Robinson finished with his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Steve Hrdlicka finished the game with 11.
