Second-half push helps WU to victory

(GREENVILLE BOX SCORE)

Sometimes good shooters get good looks, and they don’t fall.

Greenville had three shots in the final seconds that would have either tied or given them the lead, and Webster was able to hold on for the 65-62 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday at HJ Long gymnasium.

Senior Ryan Turk shook off a cold shooting night to break the 62-all tie on two free throws with less than a minute remaining. Turk finished with seven points on 2-of-14 shooting, leaving him 12 point from joining the school’s 1,000-point club. Turk added a team-high seven assists to make up for his uncharacteristic shooting performance.

Following Turk’s free throws, Greenville missed on two open three-pointers that would have given them the lead. Senior Steve Hrdlicka hit 1-of-2 with four seconds left, leaving the door slightly ajar.

However, the Panthers’ three-point attempt hit the front of the rim before falling harmlessly to the hardwood.

The first five minutes of the second half laid the groundwork for their third victory when trailing at half. Webster came out of the locker room to score the first 15 points, transforming a nine-point deficit into a six-point lead. The Panthers needed two timeouts to stem the tide – the second of which did the trick.

GC recovered to take the lead, and the teams punch and counterpunched for the rest of the half before Turk delivered the knockout from the foul line.

Junior Josue Whitcomb led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Scott Restoff added 13 points and four rebounds.

QUOTES

Head Coach Chris Bunch

"I was definitely frustrated (at halftime). When we move the ball around and get shots at the rim, we look better offensively. In the first half, we didn't shoot any free throws and we settled for jump shots. We attacked the basket in the second half and looked more the way we should look."

on the win
"It's big to get a win when (Turk) has an off shooting night. (Turk) did a great job of not pouring gas on the fire by forcing shots. He did a better job in the second half of getting everybody involved."
