Gorloks Make It Two In A Row On The Road

Squeak By Millikin 46-44 in Decatur

The Webster University men's basketball team defeated Millikin University, 46-44, in Decatur, IL, on November 24.  The win evened Webster's record at 2-2 against an early season schedule of NCAA III tournament-tested teams.

Junior Drew Moore (Northwest HS, STL) had 13 points (3-4 3-point FG), while junior Scott Restoff (Mater Dei HS, IL) had 12 points and three steals.  Senior John Ortwerth (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL) had five points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Webster.

Webster got down early, 6-0, but  came back to take the lead at 12 minutes of the first half, and were never headed again in the contest.  The Gorloks had an eight point lead with six minutes remaining in the game but Millikin pulled within two at 1:24. A foul by Restoff on a rebound attempt with 0:04 on the clock put Millikin at the line for two free throws.  Both shots missed the mark and Webster slinked away with the win.

In a tight, defensive game, Webster's seven to one edge in three-point field goals was the only statistic that stood out.  The Gorloks managed to hit 50 percent of their three-point shots, while the Big Blue hit on nine percent , on one for 11 shooting.  Both teams shot only 35 percent from the field overall, and only 17 free throws were attempted for the game.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak to Millikin, dating back to 2004.  The two teams could meet again in the championship final of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Webster on December 11-12.  Webster will take on Maryville University and Millikin will take on Missouri Baptist in  first round action.

The Gorloks home opener, and first game in SLIAC play, is on December 2 versus Blackburn College at Grant Gymnasium.  Webster begins its quest to regain the SLIAC crown it has worn three of the past five seasons.
