Gorloks Shooting Goes December Cold

Millikin 62 Webster 45

The Webster University men’s basketball team lost, in the third place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, 62-45, to Millikin University (IL) on December 12 at Grant Gymnasium.  Cold shooting again plagued the Gorloks throughout the contest.

Millikin pulled to a 13-point halftime lead, and Webster never made a serious run in the second half as the team shot 36% from the field, and 35% from the line.  A lone bright spot for the Gorloks was a season-low six turnovers in the game.

John Ortwerth (SR, DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL) had 11 points and five rebounds for the game, and Nick Jones (JR, Heritage HS, IL) had 11 points and four rebounds.  Freshmen Cody Bradfisch (Jerseyville HS, IL) chipped in five points in limited action.   Webster defeated Millikin, 46-44, on November 24 in Decatur, IL, but couldn’t duplicate the feat at home.

In the championship game, Missouri Baptist University defeated Maryville University, 80-76.  All-tournament selections were Joscar Demby and Corey Mitchell from Millikin University, Eric Gruenewald and Mike Ford from Maryville, and Brandon Roberson from Missouri Baptist.  P.J. Smith (MIssouri Baptist) was chosen the most valuable player of the tournament

The Gorloks are home on December 19-20 to host Cornell College (IA) and Coe College (IA) in the Webster University Classic.  Webster hits the road on January 2, 2010, to play Spalding University in Louisville, KY, for the first Gorlok athletic event of the new year.
