The top-seeded Webster women's tennis team opened the 2009 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 9-0 victory over Fontbonne Friday at the Webster Groves Recreation Center. The Gorloks will face the winner of the Greenville/Principia match in the semifinals at 2 p.m.
Webster dropped just three games in posting the third shutout victory of Fontbonne this season.
WU got off to a fast start with identical 8-0 wins in doubles as the doubles teams. The doubles tandem of
Allison Tungate and
Paige Tungate improved to 9-3 this season with their fifth straight victory in first doubles. In second doubles,
Alexandra Meyer and
Amanda Vest also improved to 9-3 on the season, while the duo of
Megan Eakes and
Hannah Wojahn improved to 8-2 on the year.
In singles competition, Allison Tungate ran her record to 11-1 with the 6-0, 6-0 victory in second singles. Vest moved to 9-3 and Wojahn to 8-2 with their 6-0, 6-0 wins in fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Meyer and Paige Tungate are now 9-3 on the season with the 6-0, 6-1 win in their respective flights. Eakes continued her stellar play in fifth singles, improving to 7-1 with her 6-1, 6-0 win.
