The Webster women's tennis team took an early lead and advanced to the 2009 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship match with a 8-1 victory over Principia Friday at Webster Grove Recreation Center. The Gorloks will take on Westminster, which defeated Eureka, 5-4, in the other semifinal.
Webster earned an 8-1 win over the Blue Jays, who were missing two key players, earlier this season.
The Gorloks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with hard-fought doubles victories. The tandem of
Allison Tungate and
Paige Tungate improved to 10-3 in first doubles with an 8-5 victory, while
Alexandra Meyer and
Amanda Vest moved to 10-3 with an 8-6 win in second doubles. With the 8-4 win in third doubles,
Megan Eakes and
Hannah Wojahn moved to 9-2 on the season.
Allison Tungate continued her sensational play, improving to 12-1 on the season with the 6-2, 6-3 win in second singles. Eakes improved to 8-1 with the 6-1, 6-1 win in fifth singles, while Wojahn is now 9-2 after recording the 7-5, 6-0 win.
Meyer and Vest both rebounded from dropping the first set to record three-set wins and improve to 10-3 on the season. Meyer earned the first singles win, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3, while Vest was 1-6, 6-4, 10-6. Paige Tungate was the lone Webster loss, falling in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-10.
