The Webster University women’s basketball team solidified its hold on first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by beating Westminster College, 73-65, at Grant Gymnasium on January 23.
Barissa Ford (JR, Clayton HS, STL) led a first half run to pull the Gorloks even with the Bluejays, and the team took firm control in the second half to secure the win.
Webster started slow against the taller Westminster squad, finding it difficult to convert its layups, and committed 10 turnovers in the first nine minutes of the game. Ford entered the game at the 14:20 mark and dropped in 12 points and had three steals to spark the Gorloks. In the second half, Webster started with a 5-0 run and extended their lead to as many as 13.
Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroads Prep, STL) recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Katy Meyer led the Gorloks with 15 points, and Ford finished the game with 13 points.
The win puts Webster at 7-1 in the SLIAC, and 11-5. The seven wins in the SLIAC are the most in four years for the Gorloks. Webster heads to Blackburn College (IL) to take on the Beavers on January 27, before returning home on January 30 to take on MacMurray College (IL).
