Gorloks Go Down In SLIAC, Successful 2009-10 Campaign Comes To End

Blackburn College 62 Webster University 54

The Webster University women’s basketball team saw its season end with a 62-54 loss to Blackburn College (IL) in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Webster had split with the Beavers during the regular season and both tied for second in the SLIAC with 12-4 records.  Despite Webster pulling to an early 11-point lead, the Beavers gnawed back and advanced to the tournament championship with the win at Fontbonne University on February 26.

Webster jumped to a 10-0 lead to start the game and led by seven at the half.  The Beavers gnawed back on the strength of 50% shooting in the second-half to take a 14-point lead with six-minutes remaining, and held on for the win. Maggie Zehner (FR, Oakville HS, STL) led the Gorloks with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Barissa Ford (JR, Clayton HS, STL) had 11 points, and Ayrica Lockett (SO, Crossroads Prep, STL) had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Gorloks saw a very good season come to an end. Webster won 17 games, the third most in the program’s history, and was second in the SLIAC with a 12-4 record. The second-place SLIAC finish was the team’s highest in four years after finishing in 6th place the previous three seasons. The Gorloks lose only one senior to graduation, Brittany Grant (Francis Howell HS, STL), and have a freshmen and sophomore heavy roster returning for 2010-2011, along with leading scorer Katy Meyer (JR, Parkway Central HS, STL).

Grant, who played her final game as a Gorlok, was honored at a ceremony for seniors at Grant Gymnasium on February 16.  SLIAC All-Conference selections will be announced at the championship match on February 27 at Fontbonne University.
