Experiencing once again that life on the road can be rough in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men’s basketball team barely escaped Principia College (IL) with a 67-57 win, on January 25. It was the Gorloks fourth straight road victory in the SLIAC, but before they could claim the victory, it took a furious second-half comeback by Webster to prevail.
Down 34-21 at half, the Gorloks started a 12-2 run at the 11:30 mark and pulled even at 46-46, with seven minutes remaining in the game. Webster took its first lead since early in the contest, going up by two at the 3:22 mark. The Gorloks extended the lead to six with two minutes left on a three-pointer by Freshman Hollis Edwards (McGavock HS, TN) ,and, made their free throws down the stretch for the win.
Webster had five players in double figures, led by Nick Jones (SR, Heritage HS, IL) with 15 points. Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA) chipped in with 13, Jarrod Huskey (FR, Hillsboro HS, MO) had 12, and iDrew Moore (SR, Northwest HS) had 11 points. Edwards had a season-high 10 points in the game.
The Gorloks outrebounded the Panthers 41-30, with Huskey grabbing a personal season-high 12 rebounds, and Moore pulling down 10. Moore leads the team in rebounds on the year and is averaging 7.2 per game, the second highest average in the SLIAC.
Webster won its eighth straight game in the SLIAC, and tenth in a row overall. The Gorloks, with a game in hand, sit alone in first in the SLIAC with a ½ game lead. Webster is 8-1 in the SLIAC and 13-4 overall. The Gorloks play next at Eureka College (IL) on January 29 and conclude a four-game road trip at Missouri S & T University (Rolla) on February 1.
